friend trying to rip me off .......

-
Hmmm, you're in central Florida...Was this friend the same guy that was selling VIN plates on eBay a couple weeks ago?

You just won another trophy Mike........ you hit the nail on the head!!!! That's the main number one reason we DON"T work on FAMILY and FRIENDS VEHICLE"S!!!!!!!!!! We will see you at Carlisle Mke.

I've got no bone working on cars for people I know, but they are on a heavy discount with a fixed price, before I start. If I'm confident enough to work on someone's car that I know, that's how I roll. If it's too much time out of my week at the moment and will kill me at the rate I give them, I suggest a different shop that I send folks to.

This whole deal sucks, though. I agree. Just make this person aware of their hours flagged against a typical job. Let the mechanic roll it over and this person may respond accordingly, without feeling insulted.

When deals are off the mark that I'm involved in, I don't mind revisiting figures with good reason. If I'm at fault, I'll actually go the other direction, just because it was brought to my attention and I feel that I should know better, if I'm the one providing services.

No, I read those posts and thought...this guy is kind of scary, I've only spent one night in jail and that was more than enough.

Friend? I have enemies that treat me better than that. You are getting Fcked by an Elephant!

Shoot...... I just replaced my Calipers, Master Cylinder & front brake "Master to Distribution Block" lines by myself, **** was all rusted out too. Bled the complete system front and rear "BY MYSELF" and I had the car ready to rock and roll in 2 Hours. Replacing the Rotors and packing the front bearings.......... I would not had more than 1 more hour in the deal. So 3 Hours tops done! Maybe I need to wear a MASTER TECH shop shirt to look all legal and legit.....

Nahhh, Ill wear the shirt that says.
"If its broke call DAD, ~DAD'S GARAGE~ Shop open 24 Hrs" Lol

Yes sir, the mistake I mad was not getting a rough estimate, I assumed that he would be completing the work in a reasonable rate of time, as you said "hours flagged against a typical job"

I have done major projects for friends, in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Here are my rules. This is how much, this is when I start, this is when I finish, this is how you pay me, do not change the plan and expect it to be for free, and don't ask questions or bother me at all until I'm done. My part? Do exactly what you say you want done. If you can't or will not abide call someone else. We can stay friends and go fishing while someone else busts their ***.

I just called him and told him that I was coming out with AAA to pick up the car......the price dropped to $350 instead of $600. I'm going to pay him $300 and take the car back to my house. I'm figuring 20 bucks an hour at 15 hours for the brake job, does that sound reasonable? Remember, this is not a SHOP but the guys garage at home.

Shoot man I should open a shop....Labor only. I would make a killing on jobs like this. I seriously think I could knock it out in 1 hour if that was my ultimate goal! I ain't bullshittinnnnn!

a blind monkey with one arm tied behind his back could do it in 6 hours.

Boy, are you being ripped off, and taken to the cleaners.

Some of you may recognise me as a rebuilder, and then a seller, of these A body, Kelsey Hayes, 4 piston caliper, disc brake systems.

As someone else already mentioned, the biggest labor intensive part of the job is if you are completely rebuilding the calipers.

If i was doing that job i would probably be putting in around 4 hours to completely redo the calipers.

Taking the hard lines off, bleeder screws.
Separating the halves of the calipers.
Getting all 8 pistons out of their bores.
Scraping all the rust out of the rubber sealing ring bores.
Honing the bore cylinders.
Cleaning the calipers.
Soaking them out in Evaporust.
Painting the calipers.
Putting the seal kits in.
Putting back the pistons.
Re-assembling the calipers.

That's the time consuming part of the job.

To put new rotors onto the hubs, pressing out all 10 of the studs, transferring the hubs to the new rotors, pressing in the studs.
No more than 1/2 hour to do that by any compitent mechanic, doing something like that.

Then if one had to re-install everything onto a car and get it operational again, one to 2 hours, labor time, Max.

Boy, come to Sacramento, and i would have happily done all that work for you.

Do you have a written work order for what you wanted done?
I suspect not, so i don't know how your gonna be working your way out of the dilema of yours.
Best of luck to you though.

and if u know what your doin

I figured if he was trying to get that many hours he completely disassembled everything. Blasted, painted, rebuilt calipers, rebuilt master cylinder, installed new bushings, brake lines and hoses and was charging an hourly rate the whole time the paint was drying.

I had never rebuilt a front end until I did mine on the dart. I'm talking everything. With disc brake conversion, the whole shabang. Took three days and that is with me reading the manual at every step.

At my Garage we replaced a front clip on a Duster in three days. That involved

Removing the sheet metal and the motor &trans.

Removing the front suspension.

replacing the complete unitized front after fixing the floors

installing all new suspension bushings and then putting the complete car back together.

Started on Friday. My "FRIEND" drove it home Monday night. $800 and we provided the clip.

I say with more friends like that you won't need any enemies.

You know, the more I think about it, a typical BJ shouldn't take that long. Unless it's difficult to handle, or if the job is just too big. I mean, whenever I do a BJ, I'm in and out of there without any fuss. I know that BJs can get involved, but jeez, it's just a BJ.

Go there, drop your pants, and tell him that for that price, he's stroking you and you want a happy ending since you are paying for it....

He's ripping you off. If he won't come down on the price tell him to put the old parts back on and you'll get SOMEONE REASONABLE to do it..

Hey, Karl is back....welcome back

Jim here knows his ****. I've bought many of his disc brake conversion kits. He's an expert. I would listen to what he says. He's an honest guy with integrity in my book. I've never gotten a bad deal from him.

First of all, that job does not even take 20 hrs. More like 10 max. If you can get away with 300 and learned a lesson , thats good. By the way, here on the East Coast , shops charge 80-90 per hrs labor rate. New car dealerships are upwards of 120, (my son is a Benz tech). We charge our customers 60 hrs at our small shop at home. And we do not charge List price for parts. Got all the work we want.

It really doesn't matter how much time he said it took. Every job has a estimated labor time. Sometimes you can beat the time sometimes you can't. I just rebuilt a 8.5 inch 07 Chevy Traverse rear end. Book calls for 4.6 hrs. I had trouble with my bearing puller and I spent 6 hrs on it. Guess what I charged the customer? 4.6 hrs!

Was he using his feet? How many beers did he consume? 56 hours to swap out some brake parts? Last a-body I rebuilt the front end/brakes on took me less than 8 hours.....notice I said front end as well as brakes.....and I thought 8 hours was a bit long.........
