friend trying to rip me off .......

-
At my Garage we replaced a front clip on a Duster in three days. That involved

Removing the sheet metal and the motor &trans.

Removing the front suspension.

replacing the complete unitized front after fixing the floors

installing all new suspension bushings and then putting the complete car back together.

Started on Friday. My "FRIEND" drove it home Monday night. $800 and we provided the clip.

I say with more friends like that you won't need any enemies.

Damn that was some rusty sh*t........

Find a labor guide that goes back that far and show him the amount of time it should take.

:headbang:UPDATE: When the AAA wrecker and I arrived at the house at the same time, the tune changed dramatically. He didn't even ask why the wrecker was there: he knew.
Anyway our new deal is EVERYTHING we had originally talked about for 600. If I even smell a hint of BS or gouging I'm outta there. I know, I know, most people deserve a second chance.

There you go: "Speak softly and carry a big Wrecker..."

Thanks for the update.

Ok, two vastly different stories when you convert the hours in your first post with what he is actually charging in your later post.

$600 divided by 56 hours is $10.71 an hour.
$10.71 an hour is a ridiculously low labor rate for a professional mechanic.

56 hours is equally ridiculous for that job.

What this entire story comes down to is that when you are not willing to do a job yourself, be prepared to pay.

This wasn't just a brake job:

"The job was supposed to be completely replace everything, rotors, seals, bearings, calipers, hoses etc."

"yes he did press the studs"

If you pay any less than $400, you got a deal.

To turn the rotors would have required many of the same steps plus machine work or a trip to town.

56 hours my rear. You got the shaft and didn't even get a reach around. I could do that easily in 6 to 8 hours. It isn't like he installed new ball joints and bushings.

You didn't mention if he was bending & replacing the brake lines. Even then it shouldn't take anywhere near 56 hours to do it. I certainly hope his mechanical ability & knowledge are way better than his estimating skills. I hope all works out for you in the end.

Hmmm, you're in central Florida...Was this friend the same guy that was selling VIN plates on eBay a couple weeks ago?

Who is that guy? I need one for my 71 drag Demon so I can drive it 5 miles to the track.

As for the OP - a sign of the times. We are hearing more and more stories about people ripping off other people. There is no money...

I do a lot of work for a friend. He finds parts and there's not much for $$ changing hands. When there is $$, it's agreed on before and doesnt get altered - we've both been doing this for years. He's also my 1st call to help lift, or knock down, or give a hand - and I'm prety sure I'm his...lol. I also do a ton of work for strangers and customers. Someone that just charges you for weeks of time on a job that takes a day or two is not someone that gets a second chance - friend or no.

You guys are making me feel like crap. I can't even do the smallest things. It's taken me forever to fix my KH brake system and so far all I've got done is pressing in the new rotors and hubs. Lol. Still have to rebuild my calipers, reweld my firewall, drill holes in firewall, install MC, install brake lines, and then bleed the system. :p

hey no dirt on you, your not claiming to be a master mechanic... post a thread if you need help!

It took me over a month to do a suspension job once. I pretty much needed a part that could only be ordered online about once a day. I pressed the lower control arm bushings incorrectly. I stripped the threads out of the upper control arms. Couldn't get the pitman arm off for the life of me. Couldn't get the steering box off the column. Beat on the upper ball joints with a fork for about a week straight. Plus I had to buy a new tool every other day.

As with every job I do... once I got it all finished up, I noticed I had everything on backwards and had to do it all over again :toothy7:

I'm not dustoff's mechanic in case anyone is starting to wonder.

Friend? I have enemies that treat me better than that. You are getting Fcked by an Elephant!

Shoot...... I just replaced my Calipers, Master Cylinder & front brake "Master to Distribution Block" lines by myself, **** was all rusted out too. Bled the complete system front and rear "BY MYSELF" and I had the car ready to rock and roll in 2 Hours. Replacing the Rotors and packing the front bearings.......... I would not had more than 1 more hour in the deal. So 3 Hours tops done! Maybe I need to wear a MASTER TECH shop shirt to look all legal and legit.....

Nahhh, Ill wear the shirt that says.
"If its broke call DAD, ~DAD'S GARAGE~ Shop open 24 Hrs" Lol
join the club louis, join the club....lol
