If you were looking to build a street thumpin 408 stroker that runs on pump gas which intake is your choice? I was looking at the M1 but was told it is more of a race intake. Opinions?

Torker II or Victor JR. are great intakes. Dual planes are for trucks and stock engines! :burnout:

Hi bud, i'm running the M1 on my 340 in the Valiant and love it! Got a 650 DP carb and a 1" carb spacer, 505 Isky cam, car has a 4-speed and 4.10's and pulls hard to 6,500 RPM where I have the rev limiter set at....works perfect on the street or track, this car sees lots of street miles too :glasses7:

I also have the Eddy Air Gap on the 340 in my 74 Satellite, that has a 509 cam with a 750 Holley, 727 auto and 3.91 gears, works sweet! I have had a few intakes on this engine and the Air Gap seems the best for this heavier car and combo, runs great on the street.

In your Cuda, I would throw a M1 on that stroker :burnout:

Air gap over the mp all day unless it's a higher rpm deal. 6K isn't high rpm... :)

We just had this conversation on my thread last week, and the consensus seemed to be the Air Gap would be better for a street driven car, and the M1 for a race car.

Like the M1 for track,lots a gear. M1 ,street strip. What heads/airflow?

If you do go M1 and run a square bore carb, get some Moroso epoxy and fill in the spread bore to make it a square bore carb flange.

I went M1 because I was not concerned low rpm performance. Doesn't hookup on the street anyways. Especially with my stiff handling suspension. In my particular situation, I was concerned with the car on the road course at 3000 to 6200 rpms.

Hopefully it shifted the HP/TQ curves upward? I dunno without a dyno.

I do have an Edelbrock RPM that I am holding onto to try some day.

Nice work,Autox.

Troy (NS1RM21 on FABO) did that work. He did that to the M1 on his 440 Duster strip/street car and he noticed improved idle quality. Also in the cavities of the square bore he would see wet gas stains.

M1's get a lean condition on #7 cylinder. I would go air gap.

FWIW, I have a 408 stroker, 9.6:1 with Edel RPM's, 1 5/8 hookers, 3" exhaust, 236I242E .545 lift hyd roller, Dana 60 w/3.73's and (at the time) 727 with a 4000 stall 9.5" converter. TQ 850.

Both of the below intakes have been gasket matched with some plenum work.

I had the M1 single plane on the car, pulled great at the strip, best 12.003 @ 111, shifting aroun 6500.

I installed a Weind stealth, and the idle picked up 2" vacuum (to ~10 @ 850 rpm), idles nice, and significantly increased the bottom end responsiveness. I really could not tell a difference in the top end pull, but have not run it at the strip.

I will not reinstall the M1. It look cool, but the Weind runs much better through the power curve, and makes the car much more streetable.

I bought an off brand Air Gap knock off at a swap meet, but it has a square flange, and I can't use the TQ. (did not think that one through...)

Good Luck!

Great input! Ok, long story but i'm just trying to get this thing on the road so my kid can take it to prom next spring. Right now it is a stock 340 with X heads and headman street headers. 3.91 rear. The long term plan is to go big with aluminum heads, stroker kit, mild stall, the whole shabang. I want some more punch for the long run.

For right now look for a used LD340 for your combo, it will fit your parts combo better, top it with a 700 DP and a decent cam it will be fine.

Get a copy of this month's Mopar Muscle..they compare an Air Gap to a Mopar M1 on a 360 magnum engine on the dyno...

Pick up the latest addition of Mopar Muscle. It has an Air-Gap M1 shoot out in it,with dyno results. Good read.
You beat me to it Tony. :)

How about the results for those of us that don't get the rag.

MM article in summary: MP magnum 300 hp crate, stock Eddy mag heads, Comp hr 224/230 at .050, 573/568. Dyno pulls from 3000 to 6000, shown in 100 rpm increments. M1 did'nt catch up to the RPM air gap until about 5100. Peak torque:RPM 447, M1 428. Peak HP: RPM 420,M1 428. A few torque numbers: at 3000 RPM 403, M1 371. at 4000 RPM 440, M1 394. IMO, with this particular engine, the RPM walked all over the M1.

Considering the M1 was designed after the Holley Strip Dominator, it's no surprise it did what it did. The old Holley had a RPM band of 4-7K IIRC.

I have a 408 and I took off the Super Victor and went with the RPM air gap. I love it. Fast and good torque. Just what I need in my rpm range.

i will see if i can get the dyno page copied in the morning..
