I have a 440 that I bought at a swap meet it was rebuilt (his words) and was being removed to make way for a HEMI. I removed and inspected what I could and it did seem to have new parts on/in it.
The motor seems to be blowing smoke out the tail pipe during hard acceleration and out the breather/filler cap (ruined a new set of headers).
Has anyone had this problem and any suggestions as to how to diagnose and or remedy this problem?
If I need to tear down the engine I wanted to wait till this winter when I can't drive it anyway.:banghead:

Thanks in Advance

i leak down test would tell you alot .with base pressure it sounds like rings i took a rebuilt engine apart one time and some of the rings were put on upside dowm .you never know who was in there

If it smokes under acceleration and is pressurizing the crankcase its probably blow-by from bad rings. If it smoked more at start up and idle that would be valve guides/seals.

A compression test would tell you how bad things are, but a leak down test would be better for pinpointing the issue.

As far as the "rebuilt" thing, who knows. Could have been rebuilt poorly/wrong, or he could have just been telling you what you wanted to hear. Until you break it open, its pretty hard to tell. If I bought a lot of used engines I'd invest in a borescope, they really aren't that much money anymore. Heck I've thought about getting one just for diagnostics on the engines I have. But even that won't show you something like the rings installed upside down.
