I live in a area with EXTREMELY short acceleration lanes on the interstate. My worn out 225 has to use all it has plus a prayer to get on the highway. I want a little more go, especially midrange go, without being too detrimental on daily driving.
The head is having 1.7 + 1.44 valves with a mild port/polish
I'm leaning toward using Oregon 819 grind cam
I want the block milled to get a true 8.6 CR
Clifford intake w/ a 350cfm 2bbl
I haven't decided dual exhaust via split manifold or 2.25" single
I want to keep the 2.76 rear
The trans needs a rebuild. Is there some thing I could do there to help? When I have my foot in it a passing gear engaged, it shifts to 3rd at 55mph. Should I try to keep it in 2nd longer? If so, how?

you want a good low duration/ wide LSA cam for lots of cylinder pressure at low rpm = TQ

9-9.3:1 static compression and run on 87 with a good timing curve

16 initial, 30 total all in by 2000rpm with 55-60 vacuum adv.

the 1.7/1.44 would be good with a nice port job, have them use the cutter deep into the bowls and then just blend. lastly gasket match the intake and exhaust to the head

on the exhaust run stock manifold thru 2.25 all the way from the flange back, or some split system but not headers in your case...

get a good efficent converter, like 1800-2200 stall. look up edge street converters.

that gear has to go but i wouldn't go any higher than a 3.23

do the offy intake with the two barrel, has better low end with small port and plenum.

in the tranny i would do a stage I or II shift kit for better shifts with a stock internal rebuild, but clearanced properly for longer life and more power to the ground.

Oh gosh, when did you come up with this revelation? I been preachin it long enough. Bout time you listened.

The trans being worn out is dragging you down IMO, I would check wheel and axle bearings and u-joints for drag, sounds like your timing could be off a bit.
I had a recurved distributor built by a member here and I have a bunch more low and mid range and I can feel it in the seat of the pants H.P.
A good tune up does wonders, Is this a hydraulic lifter /6 or does the valves need to be adjusted ?
I have seen a couple thread on the /6 engine is not strong enough here lately, I guess my 2.740 lb Valiant must be a good match for one.

2 words....................distributor re-curve.
