"Run and Gun" Fantasy or Practical?

-
hey, someone being honest for a change (I laugh at all the big-talking when in reality people would be hiding under a bed somewhere lol).

It is even funnier when that big talk is coming from someone who couldn't fit under a bed. I've met a few guys at the range and also have a close friend that are grossly overweight but are convinced that during such and such situation they and their tactical gadgets are going to make a high speed death machine.

I work with a spazzy little guy who talks about his guns from time to time and how he would put down an intruder or what not. I've seen this guy in panic mode and when his emotions have the best of him (always). I think if it came down to it, a lot of folks would get hurt.

He's also happy to chirp about how it wouldn't bother him at all to shoot someone if he had to.

Honestly, I think I would have a 50% at best if the fantasized "home invasion" via murderer/gang member, on drugs or psychotic situation happened. I have the guns and have years of experience shooting targets, birds, and small game but I'm not going to kid myself and imagine me doing somersaults over a couch and head shotting bad guys. My best defense is the odds. The odds if my reinforced doors and windows and barking dog don't keep them out then my announcing "I am armed and the police are on their way" will send most robbers/drug addicts running for the door. If not, I pray my judgement and nerves can take care of the rest. I would never, ever, ever want to kill someone who simply wanted my possessions.

Your co-worker sounds like someone who has been "desensitized" via Youtube and video games. I see this at my range all the time. IT types and gamer nerds with tactical toys shooting zombie targets while laughing and yelling "get some!", or "boom head shot!". Most of these guys would piss their pants if I walked up and made them flinch.

Did not read the thread just the first post. Tactical=more money for the manufactures.....to a point.

Your thread is based on the whole premise of having to use your weapon in a home defense situation , of course the best solution is always escape as I said time and distance are the best weapon but that wasn't the scenario you proposed so answers are being given based on your proposal , having been shot at and stabbed in my life I have real experience in life and death situations not simulated training situations . Any instructor worth a damn will tell you mounting a light to your weapon is stupid carrying one in your off hand to flick on and off from an off angle to light an area is acceptable but darkness is your friend making mounted lights and lasers dead give away's .

PS.The three rules of a gunfight are ?

if your not shooting your moving, if your not moving your reloading, if your not reloading your dead...

not that they cant be done together

close the third is actually if your not doing one of the three your dead and indeed doing them at the same time will increase your odds .
Who here knows that most gunfights occur within six feet ? they used to train the police in their wheel gun days to throw their free arm across their chest to protect their heart and to circle in the direction away from the shooters gun hand and fall backwards onto their back/side while firing to decrease their target profile .theirs a lot of experts who think being a weekend warrior or serving as a cook/mechanic in the corp makes them Rambo . The only thing that tells you what you will do in a life and death situation is being there and I hope none of you ever have to find out .

i dont want myself or my girl to ever be in the situation but you bet your *** we do practical shooting (USPSA) competitions and also other tranning reg's.

only tatical stuff we do in upgrading arms for better use in all situations and reliability (night sights, action/trigger jobs, etc).

Yeah. Going out and playing in a tactical pit at the gun range is a fun way to blow off some steam and have a good time. I know enough to know that it's just that.

I have enough friends and family that have served in all branches that have taught me how to shoot well. (medical DQ'ed myself)

Most of the guys I see out there walk in like they are ready to ship to a war zone but after 1-2 runs they are breathing so hard that they are about to keel over.

I still see most of the tactical stuff as just a way for gun manufactures to make a lot of $$$ from "weekend Warriors" most of which couldn't hit the broad side of a barn and were never taught how to properly handle guns.

Mom always taught me to use my head and understand the best way to survive.

Tactical, zombie prepping, end of the world etc. is all a huge marketing tool for all these companies....and I fell for it, lol. I have a good bit of firearms and prepping gear its actually a fun hobby. Like a poster above said, a lot of people like to have 500+ horse power on their STREET rides, is it needed? Of course not, but you like the "bada%%ness" of it.

P.S I am a Corporal for a Sheriffs department and from experience with being on SRT and SWAT that a lot of these "tactical" upgrades are very useful and appropriate as long as there quality products and not S&%$ you buy off of EBAY.

So what would be the firearm of choice in a zombie apocalypse?

i think choice and reality are gonna be two different things when/if it happens. i think which ever one you can comfortably carry the most ammo for and has multiple uses(hunting, protection, etc)

but its either gonna be an AR, ruger 10/22 for me

Anything you train with will help.

Having said that, it's best to have a plan...Arm yourself, retreat and alert the authorities, and not necessarily in that order as time allows.

As far as gear goes...I like my AR for home defense. Look at .223/5.56 ballistics in relation to drywall and such. It works just fine, was designed not to over-penetrate, etc. People will disagree, but...I don't care. :)

The only "tactical" gear I have on my AR is a good sling and a good light, and a good amount of training/practice with the AR along with the sling/light. The sling makes it hard to have your own gun taken away from you when it's tied around you, plus lets you handle the AR a lot more easily, and the light makes identifying---and possibly disorienting---who you're pointed at a lot easier. The only other thing I could see adding to the AR for home-defense would be an illuminated-reticle optic, like an EOTech or similar.

I probably would be under the bed too. But only so I could get a better shot of blowing the intruders ankles off when he came in the door....

Great post and solid points.

The discussion is open to any premise or situation. I think the home defense standpoint comes up the most because that is the largest segment of the market.

In your real life experienses which tactical gear would have helped best?

Seriously??? Why??? I know it's Kalifournia but damn.

Politics. I think their legal reasoning is they can consider it a shotgun so the barrel has to be 18.5". If certain powers can find any way to limit the amount of guns they exploit it :wack:

Spoken like a man who's never been a position to watch someone die.
