Hey guys, I'm a bit confused, a newbie, but through my experience aren't all distributors supposed to have a gear on the bottom. I called procomp and they said for chrysler it doesn't have a gear. This is BS right. I mean when I look down the hole on my 340 I see a receiving gear, so what can I do? I have the procomp 8006 distributor, does anyone know what gear I can buy for this distributor. Thanks guys[-(

Only slant 6 Mopars have a gear on the distributor. All V8's use a "tang drive" ---looks like a screwdriver blade -- which fits into the slot in the intermediate shaft, which stays in the block

Intermediate shaft---distributor gear, several names:

ok well I got it now, so I set my engine to tdc, what if the travel of the piston is at its highest point and the notch is not quite at zero, should I keep turning to zero, and second question if Im standing behind my engine and I drop my distributor in, should my wiring from distributor be going to the right or left.

the procomp 8006 distributor ...the slot at the bottom of the distributor does not line up with the rotor as it does on the mopar distributor.....

if you point the slot on the intermediate shaft according to the shop manual which point it at the front intake manifold the rotor is going to be about 45 degrees retarded....

what you need to do is move the intermediate shaft so that is parallel with the back of the block...then the rotor will be pointing toward the front intake manifold bolt......

been there...done that

Not all drive tangs are lined up with the dist. rotor the same way

You need to be sure you are on "no 1 ready to fire" and not no6

There are only two ways to determine that

1--If the valve covers are off for other reasons, bring the timing marks up to TDC, and look at the no 1 and no 6 valves. One one cylinder, they will both be closed, on the other they will both be "about" equally open. Whichever is closed is the cylinder ready to fire

2--Pull the no1 plug, stick your finger in the hole, and bump the engine until you start to feel compression. You may have to go 'round a couple of times if you are not familiar. When you start to feel compression, look for the marks which should be "just coming up."

Don't set the marks on TDC, but rather where it is that you want initial timing, IE about 12 for a dead stock cam, or 15 or more for a little hotter cam.

Drop the dist in so the rotor points to the "generally" front (small block) and align the reluctor wheel tip with the center of the pickup coil. Whichever tower the rotor points to on the cap is no 1. Be sure, of course, that the vacuum advance has "swing" room.

Firing order same as GM, 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2 clockwise around the cap.

There "is" a factory specified no1 plug wire, but if the drive gear (in the block) is not in right or if the dist. is "made different" then this won't be quite right.

this picture show where the slot on the intermediate shaft should be pointing as per shop manual...this is with number 1 TDC firing...

with the mopar distributor installed the rotor points in the same direction as the slot in the intermediate shaft...

now i installed the procomp 8006 distributor with the intermediate shaft as per the first picture..notice the rotor no longer pointing like the first picture.....

yes...you can wire the cap to match the rotor...but i prefer to move the intermediate shaft to get the rotor back to where it is in shop manual....just make life easier i think...

as far as where the pig tail hangs...that is your choice since there is no vacuum advance to get in the way....you can see in the last photo it is in the back on the driver side of the engine...

actually those are not bad distributors for the price of 46 dollars....

70aarcuda, that was awesome advise. that is the exact reason i love this site. members like you that are willing to go out of the way to not only help someone but educate them as well.
