Top bolt that holds the shock on the car. It is a stud that has a nut on both sides.

The nut on the side tat holds the shock on to the car came off easily. The other side does not seem to want to budge. Not particularly keen on sticking one side of the stud in the vise so I figure there may be a trick to this.

The manual says remove bolt :)

Thanks
ian.

So, someone out in a stud in place of the bolt? And you have it all out of the car?
Replace the nut and bolt with new hardware @ grade 5 or better.

why are you removing the top stud mount?

you will need some umphh!! to remove I took them out of a 74 duster & impact came right out(did spray some pb blaster prior).

do not lose them -- most people don't remove these from the car , Lawrence

No...it is oem. Odd, eh ?

Ok...to put my new shocks on, they have to come apart. I tried some pb blaster but I don't think it had much luck.

I will try the vise and a BFW.

What a strange design.

Thanks
ian.

Glad you got them apart. For the record, vise grips underneath and an impact from the trunk will take these apart easily.

I had the same problem as the OP when doing rear shocks on my van recently. The top through bolt had become friction-welded to the shock bushing. I had to cut off the head of the bolt and drive it through the frame in order to get the shock off.

Just for future work on the car, I am putting anti seize on the things that I expect they will have to change in the future.

Thanks all.
Ian.

In some places anti sieze is not a good idea. Some fastener are supposed to be torqued dry. Lube of any kind will change the amount of torque that you are applying.

mcnoople,

God information.

The manual doesn't tell me this. What parts should I avoid lube or anti seize when re assembling ?

Thanks
ian.

Sorry to bring up an old post, but would anyone know where I can buy new rear upper shock mounts studs online?

I've looked for a couple days with not much luck. :banghead:

I have my old ones out, but I'd rather replace with new while I'm under here.

I sell used ones for $20 shipped. They are cleaned and painted but if you have your old ones out, you could spend a little time on the wire wheel and save $20.

Good to know! I'm having a hell of a time removing the nut which holds the shock on. I've used PB Blaster and heated with a torch but the damn thing won't budge. I might hit you up.

If you can get the bolt in the trunk off and pull the lower shock bolt, then it may be possible to remove the shock with the stud attached and work it in a vice.

I had a heck of a time as well...my garage guys got it off easily and just charged a few bucks..

this is an old post but i wonder if there's any chance you still have a couple of these? my brother took this car (67 barracuda) apart and i keep realizing there are lots of little bits missing and i can't find these anywhere!

I sell them when I have them. I sold two sets this past month (I think they are 25 now). I'm going to Carlisle tomorrowand may be getting a parts car. If so, I will have another set.

great! I have a call out to a salvage yard, as well, but please let me know if you end up with a set! Thanks.

I appreciate your help...I've located & purchased a set. Thanks for the response, though!
