I need a few pics of the tunnel area, where the brace follows. I think someone cut into the brace on mine to weld in a 4-speed section.

Just to clarify here. At one time, someone cut out part of the trans tunnel to install a 4-speed hump section. In doing so, it looks as though they cut the floor brace that's in the tunnel. It also holds the trans crossmember. This was originally an automatic console car.
Did the 4-speed cars have a different layout that required the brace be cut or was it just someone's sloppy work?
I thought a pic or two of the underside of a Barracuda would help me see what they did.

Someone's sloppy work. That cross member carries the load of the torsion bars. In other words the front suspension transfers all the torsional stress/weight to it threw the torsion bars.

Does this help?

The brace/crossmember is supposed to go all the way across the car in the 4 speed, just like in the automatic. When installing a 4 speed hump you only take the sheet metal off on top of it, the rods go over the crossmember.

AMD (auto metal direct) makes a new torsion bar crossmember now. It will be a big job to replace... Probably a good idea to do the 1 piece floor pan while your at it since the pan has to come out to replace it.

Bummer. The floors in my car are in pretty good shape too! Just parts of the trans tunnel were cut out. Does the 1-piece floor have the braces attached?

I bought a one piece floor pan (haven't installed it yet) but it did come with all the little brackets that belong on the bottom of the pan (emergancy brake cable brackets etc) and it comes with the bucket seat brackets welded to it (easily cut off if your running a bench and want it to look correct) they also have the four speed hump if our putting a standard in it.

If your pan is still good, you can easily save it and drill the spotwelds out with a spotweld cutter and weld it back in after. I just figured I they hacked the crossmember they did the same to the pan.

Another option.. You can also find that section that's missing (parts car or put a post in the wanted section) and butt weld it in. As long as nothing looks twisted from that piece missing.

Not sure if this is what you are talking about. This is a picture of the brace on my 71 Demon with a factory notch in it. Hope this helps. Warren
