Thanks for all the comments I do appreciate it.

Well the saga continues a little bit here. I have a small problem with the carb. The carb is "perculating" or rather fuel is boiling in the bowls. I put a phenolic spacer 5/16" on and it didn't solve the problem. Now I need to take the intake off and block the heat cross over in the intake. I hate to do it but from what I have been reading this is really the only solution. I am also going to try and put heat shield tape on the fuel lines near the exhaust as well to see if that will help.

Basically the problem is only when stopped. If I drive the car for a little while and get it up to temperature then turn it off for 5min or so it has a hard time starting. Sounds like vapor lock. There is no problem at stops or at idle and the car responds fine this only happens when I turn the car off and try to restart. I can't leave it that way because all I am doing it washing the cylinder walls down with fuel (very bad for the rings..) Wondering if anyone else has run into this problem.

Stock intake with an Edelbrock 650 on it. everything else is bone stock so the only thing I can think of to stop it is what I mentioned above.

Any thoughts?

The Edelbrock insulator gaskets works really well:

Yes I would block the cross over ports. You don't need them. The modern fuels don't have the anti boil over additive any longer so fuel percolation is a problem. This is a common problem especially with Edelbrock and Carter carbs. Holleys with their fuel bowls up and away from the manifolds don't percolate as much.

Thanks 340sFASTBACK. That is the route that I am going after next. I will hopefully be able to get that done this weekend. The spacer is from Edelbrock but didn't seem to help the situation. I will update once the block off plate is in.

I do have one question though is there an intake gasket that has the port blocked or will I be doing this the old fashioned way with a sheet metal block off under the gasket?

Just curious if I can go an easier route.

Thanks for all the info

Just read thru this entire thread, and enjoyed every bit of it!! Great work and beautiful car! It definitely inspired me, but low on $$. With dads 67 "S" we found that with the new Eddy carb, it mounted fine on his stock 273 4bbl intake, but the choke linkage etc was hitting the intake manifold. We needed to raise the carb approx 1/4". He bought I believe the same spacer that 340sfastback posted. I wasnt there when he bought or installed it, but it was an Edelbrock part, and the guy at the speed shop said the purpose for it was to stop the fuel from percolating, the same problem you mentioned. Dad hasnt come across this problem yet. Great job on everything!! By the way you should make a seperate thread with the regulator install and get it made a "sticky" Sucks about your heater core too, but in reality its a small hurdle considering what you have done! Kudos!!

Great job on your car, such a long time in getting it together, shows extreme perseverance on your part !

Try the insulator to see if it fixes the problem first, rather than pulling the intake off. You might also note that depending on the fuel, it may already be winter blend which will be awful for percolation issues.

Another way to overcome percolation is to install an electric fuel pump.

Good luck with it !

I really hadn't given thought to an electric pump. The fuel in the car isn't winter blend yet. They changed over about 2 weeks ago and the car has had very minimal use because of the percolation issue so the gas is from early Sept. I have put the phenolic spacer on with the same hard start and percolation in the carb when hot. I just bought a new intake gasket with the block off and will be starting the job of putting that in tonight. I need to get it done for this weekend because the queen wants to go to coffee and cars at the candle shop near us.

Either way will update on whether this all works when done. Thanks for all the ideas and suggestions it really does help a lot.

So started taking out the intake last night. Things went well nothing earth shattering to mention. I really just unbolted it I haven't removed it yet because I don't want to leave the engine open for 2 or 3 days. I will be taking it off and cleaning it up on Saturday morning and then put the block off plate in place. Re-install then figure out how I am going to paint and touch up the engine.. I think that there will be a lot of masking tape and plastic in my future. Just a simple update nothing big.

Well I found out that one of my steelies is bent. I don't know how it happened I know it wasn't from me driving it. Well I have been looking for sometime for another 14" SBP wheel and came up empty or at least haven't found one yet.. So I started looking for something that I could use.. I found some rallies here from tqfastfish and refinished them this weekend. They look pretty good I do prefer the steelies body color with dog dish but hey they weren't original on the car anyway so I figure these should do the trick. The car came original with the really (in my opinion) ugly hubcaps which were not going on the car anyway because I hated the way they looked. I need a deep 14" trim ring but other than needing to clean the rings up a bit they look pretty good. Either way check them out and let me know what you think..

Thanks tqfastfish...

wow, wheels turned out great! They look awesome! yup, those were on my dart and I have no idea what the small trim ring was....

HOPE YOU LIKE THEM!!!

Ok so I mounted the tires on the rally rims and installed on the car. I think that they look better than I expected but would like others to judge and let me know.. Here are a couple of pictures both ways.. I am still going to have the steely straightened this way I can have (2) sets of rims to play with depending on how I feel I can put either on the car.

Either way let me know what you think..

Again thanks tqfastfish for the rallies..

Very happy no apologies necessary very hard to find a perfect set of steel rims. They are really nice I appreciate it..

Did the intake gasket solve your fuel issue?

Did the intake gasket solve your fuel issue?

For the most part the block-off plate worked. I still have a little bit of an issue on really hot days with heat soak and percolation. No where near as bad as it used to be. I left the phenolic spacer on also simply because I have an edelbrock and those are notorious for this issue from what I have been reading and researching. I have a holley in the basement just haven't cleaned it to see if it will help. Also the holley wasn't the carb the engine was dyno tuned with so I would be guessing on the jet size and such..
