Anybody run a big single exhaust? I was planning on dual 2.5", but got to wondering about a big single. I have a 4" cat back on my daily driver f150.

2 1/4 off the manifold (y-pipe) in to 3" exhaust the rest of the way back my new neighbor is an exhaust shop owner. I asked him and he told me this was the most common on fords

The factory setup on the 1967 Barracuda 273 Commando was a single 2.5 pipe to a big low-restriction muffler and a resonator. It was considered to sound pretty good. You probably have room to run 3" all the way on an A-body.

Small V8s and slants really respond to a good single exhaust. It's a hard sell and people will argue the point.

It is all about flow, and a single 3.5" will flow the same as dual 2.5". No need for X or H. One less muffler. Less expense. With mandrel bends available online, I am not sure why it isn't more common. Tradition?

That's the only thing I can think of. My truck is gonna have 3" to the thrush muffler which is dual 2.5" out. Sounds bad ***

My '95 Ram 2500 with the V10 came with a single 3" from the factory. First thing I did when I bought it (used) was put another muffler on it since the V10s sound like sixes. The muffler shop said, "Let's put a bigger 3" pipe on it to let it breath."
They didn't believe me when I told them it already had one on it - until they got it up on a lift and measured it. It's not an original California truck.

I'm thinking about this for my 68 notch w/ mild 440. Can't find a sound byte or video of a muscle car with a big single... Which fuels my desire to do it even more.

I think a 440 is big enough for duals. I am not sure a single would be practical. Maybe headers with a 2.5" Y pipe going into a 4" pipe all the way out, but pipe gets exponentially expensive from 3" on up so I think it would more efficient from a cost standpoint to use duals. Just my onion, as an old friend used to say.

Oval tubing. Run a single. Sounds smoother, more noise cancellation and possibly more torque or broader torque curve due to velocity.

My f150 had single with 3 cats and a muffler. 1 cat off each bank and one after the Y. I just took off the back cat and muffler and ran a straight 2.5 from the back of the Y to the rear bumper. Sounded smooth and mellow.

Ive been seriously debating it on my machine. HP max on single tube concerns me. The oval helps seriously on ground clearance and max tube size but you are going to run it under the rear end rather than over unless you have a master tube bender on hand.

Neat company with lots of exhaust goodies:

If you're gonna do it, look at the Y connectors that Flowmaster offers. They scavenge like a big dawg. I would use that for your Y connection. They make all different sizes. The oval pipe is a good idea. I hadn't thought of that......but it will add more expense.

I didn't know there was so much "interest" in this. I've been daydreaming about a single turbo........................

I haven't found any clips of a mopar v8 with a big single exhaust, but have found a number of small block camaros with a 4" exhaust. Here is a clip of a healthy sounding 383 wi 4" split to dual 3" tips...

*** found dyno video, 392/371 at 200* engine temp.

i had a single 4" on my 85 camaro. had a pretty healthy small block i had built. ran like crazy, sounded really good too. it went 4" to the muffler then two 3" out. most all of the gen 3 camaros have a single, to the muffler. just not room for duals if your looking for sound bites. i ran a spintech muffler on mine.
