There's a difference between stealing a candy bar etc from a local grocery store or 7-11 when you were a kid, than stealing a car. HUGE difference.
My mom caught me once after I stole some candy and took me back to the store and made me give the candy back to them and apologize. I was so embarrased, I didn't do it anymore.
But I've never robbed a business, or stolen a car. I knew better, even when I was a teenager.
