Just picked up a 360 magnum short block. Looks really good. Think I could hone, new rings and bearings and call it good. Didn't include the heads, got a box of springs and valves which might have been for those heads. Starting to look at the magnum heads. Does anyone have any recommendations for aftermarket iron heads? Going for a budget build so I'm not trying to spend a bunch of money on just the heads alone.

Contact MRL. Mike is close to you as well. Depending on what your doing, one head may e recommended over another.

Iron Ram heads from Hughes are EQ's, I am told.

EXCELLENT bang for the buck! My EQ's with a 2.02 intake and quicky bowl blend spank OOTB Eddy's at all lift points (stopped at .650') and a $950 investement vs. $1400+. And if you're really bucks down you can run the OEM Mag (1.6) rockers, available NEW for chump change.

You can also run the nearly as cheap 1.7 Viper rocker...

Yea, but those are still an OEM casting...prone to cracking. The EQ replacements (and the like RHS/Indy X heads) are a much better casting and outflow the OEM's for similar money. That makes them a no brainer...

You asked for cheap.
Most mag heads are cracked between the valve seats, usually on the end.
I have not seen one yet that leaked water.
This guy made a fortune welding up late 80's al ford escort heads and re-sellling them.
He knows what he is doing, but only sells stock heads.

I'll have a set off a 5.9 Magnum with 78,000 miles shortly for cheap if you're interested.

What are your intended purposes. You wanna go fast? You want daily driver,m.p.g?. You want a smooth idle, grumpy idle. Car ,gears,trans/converter(?), Or,just get it running?...

Street only. Want to make some power but still have a reliable engine. A step up from my built 318. Picked up the block with no heads, intake, or oil pan for $50. Car is 72 swinger, 904 trans with stock converter and 3.23 sure-grip gears. Thought it would make a cool winter project. Will include a cam change.

Get those heads Idaho has. That is a good deal for used stockers. I have the same thing on my 360 and with a stock 340 cam, cheep headers, and crosswind/600 eddy combo makes fun power, more then a early stock 340. I have a 904 and 3.23 gears as well in a 68 fastback.

Get some J heads and have the reworked. Problem solved and on the cheap.

If I had realized how cheap EQ heads were I would have put them on my 360 instead of factory replacement Magnum castings; I would have ended up spending only a bit more but with much better performance and peace of mind. They also get my vote for your build, only $310 each bare on competitionproducts.com you can't do much better than that... then port them with 2.02 valves and you will have a serious engine (say 450 HP at least on a 360?) with tons of torque everywhere due to the strong low-lift flow.

FWIW factory Magnum castings are known to be able to support 400 HP with no mods... of course that's with good cam, intake, headers, etc.
