Dim lights in dash

-
Where did you pick them up from?
I was wondering about the blue turning the needles black at night, and I also have white face gauges so maybe the best thing would be to use white LED's.

I'm still tryin' to figure all this out. My dash lights suck :eek:ops: They're almost useless @ night IMO

Ordered them from O'Reilly's yesterday & picked them up today. Here's a pic of the package.

JSI 194W is the part # & comes in a 2pk

Love them in my car. ordered the cheap ones off ebay, something like 10 for 8 bucks and new bulb holders from rock auto. They are white bulbs but I left the blue/green bulb covers on the cluster.

Easiest is to spray "contact cleaner" on the reostat, which I think you can do without removing the headlight switch. That often fixes it. If you do remove the switch, a new one is ~$11. I put super-cheap from Hong Kong ebay LED's in the dash of my 65 Dart and they look great, with a modern bluish glow, similar to dgibby's. I recall that the dimmer works. My main motivation was they should last forever and less heat to degrade the plastic lenses.

is that a white gauge overlay?

I do not know if there would be a difference or not , or even if they make a #168 bulb but the 168 are 4.94 watts, and the #194 bulb is 3.8 watts , and the #158 is only 3.6 watts.

I don't know what the wattage of #2825 is either. I can say my panel lights up just as it should for what it is considering its year model and the amount of light found everywhere else in the interior.

Usually LED's use about 1/4 the amps of a regular bulb, so I like to use them where I can because of that. (marker lights, interior)
When I find a decent set for the tail and brake lights I will be changing those too, because I replaced my backup lenses with tail/brake lenses and wired them in to the original turn/brake lights.

Now I have just the two original tail lights, but if I hit the brakes all four come on and two per side for signals.
Basically I doubled the brake and turn signal lighting.

Thanks everyone for the real world info.

Info I found is that a 2825 is .4A, 4.8W

Thanks Guys. I never expected such a response. I,m going to use this information to check things out. Keep you posted on the results. Thank you one and all!

TrailBeast.........I like what you did with your speedo overlay. The "Dart" @ 60mph is pretty dang clever 8)

Just wanted to show everyone the final results of my dash with the bulb upgrades. I only used 3 of the LED style, then used the #2825 for the other 5 locations in the cluster. This pic was taken with NO flash in total darkness........

Just a few $$ for a noticeable improvement 8-)

Thanks for the photo. You and 6pk2go rock. The photos tell the story. I was wondering what white bulbs with the filters would look like on white face.

That looks pretty good. I don't do much night driving anymore, but I could use "less green" and a little more toward the blue/ white side, without too much brilliance.

What I absolutely HATED was some of the E bodies had that stupid "spotlight" dash lighting. The engineer that dreamed that up ought'a be "fixed."

I read through this post and tried some of the fixes with my car.
1971 Demon Rallye Dash.
I have a couple of problems .

1. Had no dash lights but found the 3 prong connector on left board off and that brought light to the Speedo.

2. Then found the orange wire in the round plug on the right board in the wrong spot, moved that and now I have light but all are dim.

3. Also no light to the left turn signal indicator but although I changed bulbs maybe have another bad bulb there.

4. Lastly when I click on the brights the bright indicator lights but headlights go off.

I replaced the headlights, headlight switch and put a ground wire to the spade on it, I replaced the dimmer switch too. With a meter I see the power goes from one wire to the other at the headlight connectors but doesn't have power in both positions which I believe it needs.

I noticed my dash board has a capacitor to it but no limiter, wouldn't know where to put a limiter on it or if it should have one????

Any thoughts?

Rally dash has the limiter built INSIDE the fuel gauge.

On your indicator, does the same front signal lamp flash properly? Same wire, just branches off

Headlights, --the dimmer feeds out the headlight "hi" power on the same wire that feeds the dash indicator. This means the dimmer should be OK. The power goes through the BULKHEAD CONNECTOR which is a huge suspect. Otherwise, "up front," headlights, sockets, grounding. Since none?? of the hi beams work? I would suspect the bulkhead connector

1. OK so limiter in Gas Gage so that mystery solved. (Gas gauge works and is accurate, temp. gauge good and accurate, oil good and accurate and amps good and accurate).
2. Yes front and rear lamps blink but I feel my left side (the side that the inside indicator is dead) front bulb looks brighter to me.
I have cleaned and checked ground and socket and replaced bulbs too.
3. I have unwrapped and cleaned the forward harness but will look closer at Bulkhead connections.

Thanks for the help:blob:

Spent more time on it today but nothing better to report.
I was using a 1970 manual for a Valiant and it said that at the headlight switch the pink and red wire should be together but my car just had the pink wire at the headlight switch.
Is the wiring going to the headlight switch different in 71?
Thanks Ron
