I have several 8 and one quarter axles.

My 73 satellite
My 87 5th Ave parts car
A 1997 Dakota axle that was part o fa parts trade.

The Dak axle has 3.55 gears.

Will those work in either of the other housings?
 
IIRC [I think], the R&P will interchange in all except those with 2.41 gears. They have a different carrier.

I read somewhere that the smaller housings were 2.41 or 2.71, and the larger housings were 2.76 and "up".

I was mostly concerned with the pinion and yoke since the application is so different.

Where you close to in FL?
 
I think it's 96 and earlier that you need or 27 spline, the 97 up are 29 spline.
 
Splines on the pinion?
 
No the spline count is the axle shaft so I don't know for sure how just the ring and pinion might Interchange. I was looking more at track locs and knew I needed a pre-97. Look up new ring and pinion sets for sale and see if they make 2 different parts for the year range.
