Another D/Dart 275/273 question???

-
Odd, that Mopar offered the D-Dart with a 'Free-Flowing Intake'.

Not sure what they meant by that, as the intake manifold was the same that was on the regular 273/235 HP 'Commando'.

The Golden Commando's 'Goldfish' and Doug Patterson 'Brand-X' Barracuda
utilized a modified intake when they ran in 1965.

They took off the intake, and bored out the secondary to 1 11/16" by
using a Bridgeport Milling Machine.

And they switched over to a Carter AFB #3447 600 CFM, the carburetor
from the 1963 426 'Stage I' Max-Wedge, which had a 1 7/16" Primary and 1 11/16" Secondary.

This switch was permitted by the NHRA, as they listed that Carter AFB
as a replacement Stock Class Carburetor for the 273/235 HP.

The factory HP 273 intake is a open plenum intake but has individual holes
for each barrel of the carb. If you use any bigger carb the secondary butterflies won't open fully because of the smaller secondary holes. I put a 600 Edelbrock on my 273 and had the machine shop enlarge the secondary holes on the Bridgeport. I think the individual holes are supposed to increase torque. tmm

Toolmanmike,

Correct, the factory cast iron 273 intake manifold.

1 7/16" Primary and 1 9/16" Secondary throttle-bore hole openings.

The single-plane, low-rise intake had narrow runners, which were good for
low-end torque. They worked well with the automatic transmission cars.

1965 #2465726
1966 #2536770
1967 #2536563

Heavy little guys, at approximately 38 lbs.

I have a 68 dart 270 with the original 273 . I read about the 66
D/stock class dart with the 273, was wantiing to make
A "tribute" engine. Found the specs for the old camcraft cam that they used
Type the specs, in the desktop dyno. 355 lbs ft of torque at 5500 rpm
And 400 ponies at 6500 rpms. That is with 9.9 compression ratio 051 heads
1.88 intake and 160 exhaust. With stock flow numbed. Tunnelram intake 800cfm
I have played around with other
Heads cams but so far this is a good combo and it fit in the budget. All parts but the
Cam and lifter are on my self..

My 1966 Dodge dart runs horrible (273 2 Barrel )! It stalls when I come to a complete stop ,the engine runs ruff and it shuts down when it gets hot ( starts losing power until it just gives up and stops ). After letting it cool down it starts back up, but still runs like crap ! If you have some suggestions please email me @ tsprod1625@gmail.com Thanks !

Here's ddartdude's old D/Dart in Seattle several months ago. he shared with me that the particular motor in this car is a 273 2 barrel motor with modern dogs headers, a alter model aftermarket intake a Holley 1850.

hi, I been reading about the 273 motors here. back in 1972, we had a 65 dart 235/273, it was a legal stocker. had the trw pistons, lunati stocker cam, 5.13 gears, 7" slicks, 4 speed trans, stock heads, with 3 ange valve grind, best it ran was 13.31 @ 102.31. I can tell you it didn't make 400hp!!! more like 250 hp, weight was 3150 . today's stocker 235/273 will run 11.70's , @ about 109 mph. they make around 320 hp. your computer program is very optomistic!

Perfacar,

Those numbers are pretty close for 'Back-in-the-Day'.

In 1970 and 1971, in L/S {NHRA Class} the 'Top' 273/235 HP A-Body
Barracuda and Darts were running at a best of 13.50's @ 103 MPH.
