Hello to all, I've got a console out of a demon and I'm installing it in my 71 scamp. Ive searched the forums for a way to disassemble the shifter itself from the console. I've got it down to the knob but cannot separate the knob from the shifter shaft. There has got to be a way to separate the two i've just not been able to figure it out and i sure don't want to trash it.
Thank you in advance for whatever advice you all have in helping me out with my conundrum.

Kevin

If you're speaking of an automatic, there's an allen key on the underside of the knob,, loosen it, and unscrew knob..

got the allen screw out and it will not separate, it just spins

Yes, and as you turn it counter-clockwise several turns, you'll notice that the inner knob will unscrew, and release the outer "knob".. when re-installing turn until inner knob is even with outer.. the "set screw"..

hope it helps..

your saying kinda what i'm thinking, and with what your saying i'm starting to believe that it's frozen on the cable. I say this because the pawl that keeps it in gear is unscrewing and falling out. I hope you understand what i'm talking about.

Maybe try shooting some wd-40 or some other kind of penetrating fluid behind the knob and give it a few minutes to work and then try to twist it off. Sometimes they can be stubborn and need some persuasion!

crazy, the outside knob is loose from the shaft, the black push button is loose from the outside knob, the whole assembly moves up and down inside the shifter shaft, I've pulled like crazy and cannot get it to separate.
the set screw is completely removed.

Try unscrewing just the inside black button, it is somhow still attached to the cable..

The button holds the outer knob on the shaft...

When you pull on the knob,, does it pull up the "pawl".

yea if i leave the pawl on it, i can remove the pawl (unscrew it from the cable).
once the pawl is off the whole assembly turns.

I'll work on it tomorrow, thanks for the info.

Good Luck,, I've never had one stuck,, usually jumps off in your hand at the end of the threads..

cheers
