Fan timer after turn key off? B/C our 440 carb boils over mid summer.

Hey folks :) Just wondering if anyone had success with helping reduce carburetor boil over by running the cooling fan 2 minutes after engine shutdown? Motor is mostly stock low mileage 440, performer intake (cross over blocked at intake), new AVS 800, carter mech fuel pump (cant remember model). Fuel lines do not contact engine but may be exposed to some header heat.

Seems like since the BB is an air gap type intake it would enjoy some cooling air after the engine was off.

Issue is: only during really hot summer days, requires 15 - 20 seconds of cranking and I feel like it is a bit flooded so we just crack the throttle 1/4 and crank till it fires. It usually behaves a bit flooded so just holding it at 1/4 throttle and clearing it right out is the key during cranking and after it fires, revving it up a bit. After the first "whoooom" as it lights off and starts revving, it clears out in about 3-4 seconds and will idle fine.

Bit long on the story but does anyone recommend a fan timer / thermostat controller? We have dual fans on this thing.

Also, we are currently running the fans to kick off at 180 and on at 190 with a hayden dual fan adjustable controller.
Thanks much.

Try ethnohol remover and a carb spacer, also trailbeast sells a hei set up for stock distributor that makes a lot hotter spark and it will stop the long starts, if tuned right.

Yes, on this car we are proably not going HEI due to it appearing very stock these days. May we'll get a FBO module + coil and have our dist re-curved though. Maybe the hotter spark will help fire during a bit of a flood. Ill look into a thick carb gasket to see if it can handle one.
Still interested to see if running elec fans after engine shut off will help carb cooling

I did this on a stroker smallblock Ford. I had two fans, each with a thermoswitche in the thermostat housing - one that went on at 90, off at 85 and one that went on at 95 and off at 90 (degrees centigrade). The cooler switch was on with ignition and the hotter was hard wired. Only used to run for a few minutes on hot shutdown. Worked well to stop it boiling over after shutdown and also stopped hewt woak in the fuel bowls.

I took a close look (couldn't remember) and the gasket btw carb and intake is super thin.

I'm going to get a fatty 1/4" + gasket somewhere.

Anyone know where to get a square bore thick gasket? Needs to seal btw eddy thunder avs (square bore) and a performer intake (I think performer intakes are spread bore?). But, I think from what I do remember, the AVS thunder is wide enough to cover the spread bore and seal.

And I'm going run the cooling fans on constant so they just after run till thermo sensor shuts them off.

Good advice in two posts. Very nice. Thanks y'alls!

I have the 5/8 square bore insulator from Edelbrock AND my fans stay on until the thermo shuts it off and I still have the heat soak issues.
Not as bad, but still enough to be annoying.
Edelbrocks and Ethanol just suck together.
The HEI did help a little also, but still there.

Going to do the fuel return line next.

If you are looking for a heat insulating spacer, the best I have found are by coolcarb. I have two thin ones under my holley, one that keeps heat from reflecting onto the fuel bowls and another the same size as a carb gasket on top that acts as a spacer so the linkage will clear.

Okay Thanks, ill look into that brand. Also, WOW! what a nice looking motor color scheme!

Cant find "coolcarb spacer" on the internet.

Do you have a source qkcuda?

Edit: I reckon I can just use a wood laminate edelbrock 1/2"

Thank you.

I had this problem, turned out to be a fuel pump on its last legs and the carbs float level set to low.

The web site is called EZCool, and it is called CoolCarb (all one word) I just looked it up.
