I have sprayed single stage urethane paint enough to no that I can paint my car with some confidence. I know base coat clear coat is the way to go but that's double the chances for mistakes. My car isn`t going to set out side it will be in my garage when I`m not driving it. what do you guys think should I go with what I know or do what I know is the best way

I shot alot of metallic paint in another life, so I vote base / clear. I like single for all but exterior panels. Exterior, I like clear 'cause it is more forgiving if there are a few imperfections in it and buffing now and in the future with follow up buffing or repairs.

Like for a driver you will end up with scratches and miscellaneous stuff happens over time, you can repair, blend, buff all sorts of things more easily with clear. My two cents.

If you shoot metallic single stage paint. it's pretty much a "ya get what ya sprayed and see" paint. no cuttin and buffin to smooth out the rough spots or it'll screw up the color making the metallic look mottled in places. with base/clear you can shoot you base, look it over and redo if you need to and then clear which you CAN cut and buff without too much problem. BC/CC is a lot more forgiving to a non pro sprayer. I'm not saying it can't be done but it sure is easier(at least for me):D.

Base coat / clear

I have shot everything over the years professionally.
All paint systems work, just some are easier than others.

The slickest paint job I ever done was on a 39 Chevy coupe.
It was an straight acrylic enamuel blue with metallic.
I heated the paint on a hot plate to 120 deg F and the paint booth was about 65 deg F.
It had just started raining outside.
The paint laid down like a mirror, no orange peel, no dust.
The customer looked at it the next morning, before it was un-taped and said dont touch it.

base/clear. that's what i did my bike in and what i'm going to do for my dart. single stage inside the car, but 2 stage out. most clears now have UV protection to save your paint. if it fades, either cut/buff, or sand/ respray. a lot less time on upkeep.
