Ok looking for suggestions, the car I picked up a couple of months ago has started showing signs of oil in the antifreeze. Its a 64 Dart 270/ 225 slant with pushbutton automatic There is no signs of antifreeze in or on the oil dip stick and no steam coming out the tail pipe, The trans fluid look fine also, I want to say its a head gasket, but I am not hundred percent sure. The radiator gets full of this black / gray oily substance and it smells like trans fluid. I am going to pressurize the trans cooler in the radiator to check for leaks, then check the block with pressure. I dont care to replace the head gasket, just dont want to if its not the problem. I am use to headgasket problems showing up in the oil or out the tail pipe, not just as oily fluid in the radiator. I have driven it over two hours one way and it never got hot or overheated..

have you looked for coolant in the trans fluid ?

None there either... The stuff in the cooling system is black and oily, and smells like trans fluid. I beginning to wonder about the trans cooler in the bottom of the radiator..

Based on what you say, I think just like you do.
It smell like trans fluid?
That's a good indication.
I don't know which has the higher pressure, but I guess it would be the transmission pump most of the time.
Be careful when you leak check the radiator.
I forgot to turn the pressure regulator back down when I was checking a heater core and blew it up.
Duh.

For the small price of a external aftermarket trans cooler.. I wouldn't worry or even bother to pressure test that OEM cooler.
Heres a tip... Go to Advance and buy the smallest coolant recovery tank and recovery type cap. During the next few weeks you will collect the oil in the coolant on the interior wall of that plastic tank.
Remove it wash it out, carry on.

if it smells like trans...

Can you bypass the trans cooler, flush the rad, and go for a couple short drives?

I've been yard driving a Charger with the trans lines hooked together for several months because someone cut them and stole the fittings.

If it's only going into the cooling system, it's just a matter of time before coolant goes into the transmission. That would SUCK.

Yup, confirmed the trans cooler in the radiator is bad. I going to put a external trans cooler in and call it a day. Thanks everyone for the input.

If it's bad, you will need to put pipe plugs in the cooler at the bottom of the radiator. Also check VERY closely at the condition of the transmission fluid.

Guess I dodged a bullet, trans fluid looked fine. Trans was three quarts low, I had the pipe plugs and installed them. Everything hooked up and working the way it should. Tomorrow adjust the valves, fix the brake lights, oil change and install a oil gauge. It should be ready for a road trip after all that.

Yea you dodged a bullet alright.
Coolant will destroy a trans in a heartbeat, but it sounds like you caught it before the coolant went back into the trans.
