As the title says, who sells 2 1/2" mandrel bent tail pipes for A-bodies (69 Dart)?? I think I am going to make my own system with the 3" Jegs X-pipe kit and Dynomax Ultra Flows but only if I can find good 2 1/2" tail pipes.

Thanks

Summit sells header back mandrel bent system with mufflers for $249. I have this on my 67 GT with sb and can't beat it for the money, quality and sound. Check them out, Joe

I don't see a listing for just tail pipes from Jegs or Summit?? I don't want to buy their whole kit when I will just using the tail pipes as I want to go with an X-pipe setup and Dynomax Ultra flows.
Maybe I just go with the complete 2 1/2" Pypes exhuast as that come with X-pipe and is stainless?? Decisions decisions.......

back in the early 90's i took mine to a muffler shop that bent/welded mine up for 80 bucks lol.
i had open headers on, and a couple boxes in the trunk with new mufflers already; they were big old Cadillac mufflers with 2.5" openings. the midas shop had plenty of pipe on hand.

I took mine to a local exhaust shop that had a great reputation. He got me true 3" rolled tailpipes and made the rest. Both tailpipes, both Flowmaster 40's, custom pipe from headers to muffler and an H pipe cost me $375 including labor. The pipes are out there. If you can't find them, PM me and I will check with this guy. I can always buy them and ship them to you if need be.

according to torque tech new website, [FONT=Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif]Tailpipe Kits are available only for GM A, F, G & B-Body Vehicles.

bummer because I am in the same dilemma!

I used the Summit kit from headers back and it fit terrific but if you just want from the mufflers back, I'd try a local shop. I've never done this but I just had a friend telling me that Midas has a computer that has a data base of cars in it. They chose the vehicle and the machine bends the pipes to fit. Can't say if it would include your vehicle or how well it works but it's kind of intriguing enough to look at. I just wouldn't let Midas do any actual work on any of my cars.

Tom Swope at Accurate can make you anything you want and it will fit when you get it. He knows his stuff. I haven't used him in years but when I did I was amazed at his knowledge.

Send them an email, I've bought from them twice. I had their 3" tail pipes on my 69 Barracuda.

accurate is NOT what he is looking for!! he wants mandrel bends not crimped bends! i have the accurate system on my 70 it fits nice but it is no way a performance exhaust and a bit pricey for what it is!! i am happy with the summit kits they are really nice for the $$ i reccommend buying the summit kit, then using the tailpipes and selling the leftover parts!! .... it will be a good start of an exhaust system for someone then

here are the part #'s for flowmaster A-body 2.5" mandrel tailpipes...

16793s and 16794s

maybe you can buy them seperate from the kit?

The Jegs and Summit systems do in fact work and fit. I would like to add beware, I have the Jegs 2 1/2in header back system on my 74' Duster and the kit fits but aft of the rear end they have the pipes a pretty straight angle. If you buy them you will have to take the aft pipes to a shop to have the angles deflected, otherwise you will see more of the pipes peeking out than they should. If you want I can explain the process I used to template the correct radius.

Great feedback guys:thumblef: After adding everthing up seperatly I think I am better off just going with the complete 2 1/2" stainless steel Pypes system. Car only has a mild 340 so think I will be fine with a 2 1/2" system. Down the road I might change the mufflers out for the Dynomax Ultra Flows as I love their sound but I will see how the Pypes Race mufflers are first.

Thanks again

I have the Pypes system on my car. It sounds good but its pretty mellow.

The Summit and Jegs kit are great as long as you don't have TTIs.
To make it work with TTIs you use the whole kit except the collectors extensions and will have to have a muffler shop complete the system to the headers.
Will have to do this to install on my 74 Dart
May have an H welded in as well

A few questions for dgswinger .What is your definition of a crimped bend? Did you mean to say compression bend? There is a difference between the two.
Also do you have reliable data that supports your comment that an "accurate system is no way a performance system"? Maybe you possess an unbiased real world comparison study between a compression bent exhaust system versus a mandrel bent exhaust system you could share. This would require all other components being equal and each pipe being replaced and tested individually comparing the two as one progresses through the study. As most in the exhaust industry will agree , an exhaust system performs as a complete properly designed system. Simply exchanging smooth compression bent pipes (not crimped) to mandrel bent pipes has not proven to be a silver bullet for increased power and torque. Regarding value and if a product is "a bit pricey".
The compression bending process allows for heavier gauge tubing to be used and closer, compound bends to be applied for a better fit in tight areas.
Heavier material help confine the exhaust tone within the pipe for less resonation and pipe pinging issues associated with thinner tubing material. In line with the above , a good fitting exhaust system that sounds good, lasts a long time and performs well may not be a "bit pricey" in the minds of those that actually have experienced both worlds.

I recommend Heartthrob also. In fact, the Summit and Jegs brand exhaust is made by Heartthrob. Their HVS mufflers are great too.

i will do my best to answer these questions!! i guess i do mean compression bend it is not the wrinkled looking bends but the pipes is compressed in the radius areas. i have had both kinds of systems performance and restoration stock type systems.
when i say these are not performance exhaust systems i mean i would not put one on a race car i was building!! accurate systems fit nicely and look great for a restoration and sound stock!! most people looking for a performance exhaust want mandrel bends and and a lot of thought goes into what it sounds like!! most arent looking for stock sound! and my opinion is that mandrel bent systems have a different sound than a compression bend or crinkle bent pipe.
i have owned many cars and trucks with all different brands and styles of exhaust. i was not trying to bash your brand of exhaust system!! just simply stating that accurate products would be more for a restoration and not usually what people would call a performance system!!
the OP asked for MANDREL BENT 2.5" tailpipes if you offer these contact him! i sure he would be happy to buy them from you! If not accurate exhaust is not what he was asking for!
as far as the "bit pricey" goes. its an opinion. and most of us restoring cars that would put this type of system on our cars dont drive them to the piont of where the system will ever rot off of them again! the only reason i didnt have a local shop do mine was i dont trust any of them so i paid almost DOUBLE the $$ of my local shops for the accurate system simply for piece of mind not because i thought it was my best value! TTI was on back order and i needed exhaust on my car asap!!
not sure if i answered your questions, im not an exhaust expert but simply a car guy that bought an accurate system and feels its not a performance system in comparisson to sound and looks of other types. its for the restorers not racers!! would i buy another accurate system YES but not for something i thought was a performance build. my system is quiet and i even got the upgraded mufflers for more $$!
