what is the widest tire I can put on a 72 dart on the rear with factory ralleys, will a 235/60/r14 fit

For that size tire, a 6½ inch wide rim is required. IIRC, the A-body rally wheels were 5½ inch wide. For this rim width, the max is a 205/60. I have 205/60-15s on 7 inch wide Magnum 500s on a 73 Dart Custom. There is no problem with clearance.

I have 235/60-15s on 7 inch wide cop rims on the 72 Demon. In the rear it is close to the spring, but acceptable. I don't have any problems with interference with the inner fender. I know that the fender openings are less restrictive on the Demon but don't know about clearance with the top of the wheel well.

215/70-14 is the largest size tire you can use on a 5.5" wide rim according to tire manufacturers,
I dont think it would be terrible to use a 225/70-14 if you really wanted to,
anything larger or lower profile would be a bad idea though

I had 225-70-14s on the stock ralleys on my Dart Still bigger then they recommend

that looks good
I am changing from 215/70-14's to 205/70-14's on my 66 barracuda, with rally rims,

my 73 340 Duster had 245-60-14s on the factory rallyes out back and 215-70-14 up front when I got it and it bolted up and fit perfect on my 74 Dart Swinger and weren't too big for the rim and looked great
245-60 is not too big for a 5.5 inch wheel. It just gives it a little sidewall bulge
My father has 275-60-15 mounted on factory 15x6 rallyes on his charger with no problems in the 20 plus years they been on the car.
IMHO some sidewall bulge looks great

Tell that to the poor guy that has to mount them. 5.5" rim and a 8" tire

There are two fitment issues here. 1. The widest tire that is designed to fit the factory 14 inch rally wheel. 2. The widest tire that will fit on the rim and in the wheel well without further modification to the car.

Notes on #1.
a. Don't just take someone's word that the tire you want to use should be used on the rim available. Major manufacturers have web sites. BFG, Goodyear, and Michelin have a tab in the thread for the tire labeled pricing and specs. This tab has lines listing the tread width, tire height, and rim width range (among others).
b. Just because the tire can be mounted and filled with air doesn't mean it should be used. I had a '66 Dart GT with 205/70-14 tires on 4½ inch wide rims. When inflated to factory specs, the outside edges of the tire lifted off the pavement. When inflated to put the outside edges on the ground, I experiences a rapid deflation on the right rear while rapidly turning left.

I have a pair of 275/60D14's on rally rims. Talk about bulge!! I didn't do it, I bought my Barracuda with them on it. If I ever wanna use those rally's, I'll have to cut the tires off. I'd hate to do that, cause I hear that size in Pro-Tracs are hard to find, and these are in good shape.

minimum rim width for a 245/60-14 is 7"
and the minimum rim width for a 275/60-15 is 7.5"
bulging sidewalls not only look stupid, (or good?!?!) they make your car handle like ****

Going beyond the manufacturers recommended rim width puts the sidewall of the tire beyond the edge of the rim and limits the sidewalls ability to support the weight of the car. The more bulge you have from a tire too wide, the worse the condition gets!! Do you really want to compromise the safety of your loved ones for a slightly wider tire??

Can you do it?? Of course, but I wouldn't!! Just get a wider rim if you'd like a wider tire!! They make them in all different widths and back spacing now,'why not just do it right?? Geof

Just because you can physically get a tire onto a wheel doesn't mean you should.

Kind of like...... This chick could physically get those shorts on, but it probably wasn't the best judgement call.

Thanks for all the input Guys Thats why I joined fabo you all have been a great help I think the 215/70s will be the best call, I dont want my car looking like the girl in the shorts lol

I put 245/60r14 radial T/A's on 14x7" Magnums(FORD rims-uck! I know!) on the back of my "73 Dart and they fit nicely! My car is at standard ride height-No air shocks, shackle extensions, etc. I do have McVeigh built rear springs but again-standard ride height.

There are things in life I have seen that I should not have seen. This is one of them. LOL

(Perfect example of "Just because you can doesn't mean you should.)

i stuck my 28x9-15 Hoosier slicks on 15x8 w/ 4.5BS under my 73 swinger and they only needed a 1/4" spacer and they would be perfect...
