Craiglist has 2-413 mopar engines out of two different motor homes, first what is a 413 motor, second are these a good blocks to build a stroker motor from--Steve

Depends on what year they are. If they are early models they are more than likely 413-3 industrial motors. These have a few things that make them different than a car 413. Do you have a picture of them?

It's an RB big block. Most times the 413 motorhome engine is a unique engine in that the heads and intake are completely different from car stuff and cannot be used.

Even if they are not, they are an expensive proposition as piston availability is limited to very expensive stock replacement cast (over 400 bucks) or even more expensive forged custom pistons usually around a thousand. Get a 440.

When was the last year a 413 was used in a motorhome? I'd love to see what those babies look like today? :D

I agree, if there just cores, and not "running" examples, id probably pass.

a 413 is well worth the effort if it is cheap enough ...I like to take the nice strong forged cranks from them and put them in last cast crank 440s ....to make a forged crank 440......the later 440 blocks are good enough to use and with that strong 413 crank is a cheap and winning combo

413 is an RB engine so the stroke is the same 3.75 and the main journals are the same ....so its a direct swappy swappy

just make sure the engine rotates in the proper direction ...some industrial 413 engine turned in the opposite direction ...and also check the back of the crank to make sure its a 6 bolt flange and not the 8 bolt which is for a different application

If all your after is the block to build a stroker then I'd say yeah it would be a good starting point, motorhome blocks were cast with smallish thick wall cylinder bores. On a stroker build the stock rotating assy usually hits the scrap bin anyway so the heavy crank and ultra low compression pistons are out of the equation and the heavy duty heads, intake, water pump, cam, etc... can be swapped to std production stuff. As long as the these engines haven't been severely overheated or frozen they should be a good base for a stroker build.

Except for what you pay for the block it will cost you the same to stroke either one so I'd hold out for a 440.

my freind has a big *** boat with two 413s one is revese rotaion....

Yeah, or you could take the 413 crank and drop it in a 383 for a 426 or a 431 with overbore. but you have to turn the crank down. Whatever floats the persons boat. I think I'd build a 426, but BBs are $$$ that is out of my range.

I think Rani hit it on the head. I bought one from a running MH that had a decent leak down and compression (real low, but consistent). Built 906's (Now would have used 516's or 915's to build CR, or even 440 source), M1 and Purple 509, pan and Demon Carb. Put it in a 67 Belvedere. Pulled hard, was fun and built on a budget and was my new found Mopar knowledge.

I like the 426 stroker, but whats your budget and intent?

No way a 413 will bore to a 440 bore size. Ain't happenin. That's .135" over. Get a clue. The 413 was great in the day, but throw it in the ditch and keep the crank and rods. That's all that's any good for anything. Egge Machine is the ONLY manufacturer that makes replacement pistons for the 413. CAST is all that's available and they are over 400 bucks. To get something forged, you have to go custom. That's around 1K. Read all this again if you are hard headed. The 413 ain't worth it. I don't give a rats butt who has one or how fast it is. Don't waste your money. Get a 440.

Sarge Barracuda nailed it. Sold a water pump 2 years ago,for one. Rani, dead on.
Bad440's boat,a rare beastie.
If cheap enough, the cranks are nice.

RustyRatRod is right. Limited piston availability is a real downer for a 413. If you came up with a max wedge 413 that might be a different story.

if you do get the 413 ...I have a new piston ring set .....I have a 64 413 and I was starting to build it until I got a 70 440 block and transferred the 413 crank to the 440 ....so now I have parts for a 413 .....I might make a coffee table out of the block
