Quick question, been going through the forum and maybe I'm missing it, but what model, engines/trans combos would one be likely to find a 8 3/4 rear in an A body?

second, what rear would be likely to be found in a 74 dart custom 318, fully optioned car?

Planning on it. I found one in a junkyard about 3 hrs from me. I went and checked it out this morning but the car is sitting in ton of debris from who knows what. Its the messes junkyard I've ever been too. Anyway, its sitting such as I cant get under the rear to see what it is. I'm going back Monday and the owner said he'll pull it out of the debris and weeds for me to check. May end up just buying the whole car for parts.
 
It depended what was available that day when the car was built. Ive seen slant 6 cars with an 8 3/4 from the factory.

Not only that but remember back then when you ordered a car you checked off each individual option you wanted, unlike today when you have to take 20 other options to get what you want. That's why you see some cars with a /6 or 318 have a 8-3/4 rear.
 
you will likey always find a 8 1/4 behind a 318 in a 73-76 A body
 
I'd say you just have to look in person. My '70 Swinger with 318/904 has an 8.75 rearend. Some members posted on my build thread that they thought there was a package offered with an 8.75 rearend, rim blow wheel, remote mirror and disc brakes and nicer trim. Mine had the rim blow (it was badly cracked so I replaced it with a three spoke from a '73), still has the remote mirror and the 8.75. I don't know if there was a specific package or not.
 
Chrysler used the small bolt pattern and the 7 1/4 all the way to 1976 in the A body. If it had drum brakes all around, it had the small bolt pattern. All the way to 76. And as far as the 727, that would be incorrect for the 318 cars, because the 904 was used. My grandfather's 71 Dart was a 318/904/7 1//4 car. Drum brakes. Just like they were all the way to 76.
 
73, 904, 318, 7.25 rear here too.
Just because it has 318 does not mean it had something other than a 7.25
And just because it was a slant6 car does not mean they all had 7.25
 
Rule of thumb... If it has drum brakes up front, it will be small bolt pattern and a 7 1/4"....if it has disc it could be an 8 1/4" or LBP 7 1/4". It will NOT have an 8 3/4" in 73 and up cars unless it has been changed out for one!

My '70 has drums all around, small bolt pattern and the 8 3/4. How unusual is that with the 8 3/4 or not so much?
 
I think that general rule of thumb applies to the vast majority of A-bodies but apparently there could have been some variations because according to the fender tag on my 68 Cuda it was a drum brake car all around, 318 engine, yet it had a 727 tans. and 8-3/4 rear. It was built like a base 340 car but only with a 318. I wonder if there was some heavy duty suspension package available that got you all of these? Nothing noted in the fender tag and I don't have the build sheet but it was just a thought..
