So I just finished installing a new cam and heads in my 383. I am having a he'll of a time getting the initial timing setup. It turn over and sounds like it wants to start, but nothing. I tried retarding and advance all that seems to do is backfire through the carb. I'm at a loss.

A bit more information, I turned the crank to tdc. Saw where the rotor points and set #1 terminal there as a start point.

Did you make sure it was on the compression stroke for number one? I just put my finger over the number one hole. You'll feel the compression as you crank it over on the starter. Make sure the coil wire or distributor is not hooked up, btw.

sound like 180 degrees out. turn distributer 180 degrees, then try

I'd bet money it's this, and if it was me, I'd go ahead and buy a new cam rather than fill the motor with filings from the lobe that you've probably already wiped.

Like they said - the piston is at TDC twice on each cycle. Once for compression, once for exhaust. I'd bet you have it at TDC on exhaust when you set the distributor in it. My nickname for a few years when i was younger was "King 180"...lol.

Just went through this firing up my slant. I had the backfires also, from what I read that is a tell-tale sign that it's 180 off. I was able to confirm by checking play in rockers to see when #1 valves were actually opening. Corrected distributer and it fired right up

Either 'timing' Distributor is 180* 'out', or you're Firing Order {Spark Plug Wiring} is incorrect.

If it is firing back through the Carburetor, you are at least getting proper 'spark'.

Got it running. It was actually incorrect valve adjusting. Just glad nothing got messed up. Guess I'll chalk that up to inexperience. Now I know what is meant by zero lash...thanks for all the help!

Still have a few things to iron out but here is a video of it running.
