The tanks rust from the inside out, as long as it was in good shape I would just replace the pump.

I used some gas tank coating on mine when I got it. Red Coat. I got it from Oreillys. It works good, but it takes some time to dry. Mine took a solid week to dry completely, but it's plastic coated on the inside now.
