I have a 6 hp blackjack with a 60 gal tank. I have had it 11 0r 12 years. When it was new worked real well and recovered fast when using air tools. Over the years it struggles to keep up with demands. I ordered new valve plate and gaskets but didn't help so I guess the rings are shot. Trying to decide what next move should be? Replace with an IR 2 stage from Tractor Supply for $1100.00 or just replace the pump on mine with a 2 stage like this one from Eaton on Ebay.http://www.ebay.com/itm/Brand-New-Ea...item2c73cc130e Any thoughts about a good choice??? :-?

Comes down to dollars and cents really, but i can tell you them Eaton compressor heads are of good quality..

I have used Eaton compressors for several years and have been really pleased with them. Much better quality.

Eaton compressor has a very good reputation. I wouldn't spend 1100 if I didn't need to.

What condition is the tank in?
The tanks rust from the inside out, as long as it was in good shape I would just replace the pump.

My Tank and 6hp motor seem to be in good shape. I have had a auto bleeder for quite a while too try to keep the condensation to a minumin. I have sent email to Eaton about what would be the best pump to retro fit. Thanks for the help. Bill :D

I used some gas tank coating on mine when I got it. Red Coat. I got it from Oreillys. It works good, but it takes some time to dry. Mine took a solid week to dry completely, but it's plastic coated on the inside now.

I bought direct from Eaton, (edit 500 bucks) for a 3 cylinder 2 stage compressor (plus 100 shipping) I'm running it w/ an 11hp gas engine, pressure on/off circuit like an electric compressor. I did several tests and got about 15 + cfm average from 90 - 150 psi . Eaton's prices on a high cfm compressor are fantastic. If you have a 6 hp motor then you can get like an 18 + cfm @ 90psi pump for it.

Here is mine:

Otherwise, why dont you just fully rebuild your compressor?

You hit it right on the head. I have been emailing back and fourth with Steve at Eaton. I shared the specs of what I have now and he told me that the largest pump I can use is their 18 cfm single stage triple. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Eaton-Brand...869?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27d9486cd5 I want to be able to use my blast cabinet and try to paint the cuda down the road. So looks like if I want 2 stage pump will have up grade the motor as well. So have to save my pennies and hope my mine will limp along for a few months. :banghead:

I would overhaul the upper half of the compressor. I mean, disassemble / pull the sleeves off and re-ring / hone if possible. Since you have already done the valve pack or whatnot. Maybe you could get 5 more years! Does your compressor have rebuild parts and data (available from aftermarket or manufacturer)?

Your pump must be pretty darn beastly if it is run by a 6hp electric motor. That's why I think a rebuild could be in order. Heck, maybe check around, maybe some operation near by can rebuild it for you? Maybe spend 200 or 300 and have a new macine for 5 - 10 years while you save up for its replacement, a radial 8 cylinder diesel 3 stage compressor :)

Never though of that good to know.

My compressor is 22 yrs old 5 hp 220v and the pump is getting really tired, when you drain the tank it look like chocolate mixed with water...

Does anybody know how to test an old tank....safely
I know on autoclaves they hydo test them to 1.5 of operating pressure for certification.

I had an old used Westinghouse 5HP 220V 80 gallon upright air compressor that I used for many years to run all of my air tools while performing general auto work. When I purchased a large ScatBlast blasting cabinet, my poor old compressor just couldn't keep up with the blaster - kept having to wait on it when blasting. I decided to sell the old compressor and pick up an IR 7HP 220V 80 gallon 24 SCFM upright air compressor. It will be the last compressor I will ever need and I can likely pass it on to another family member after I'm done with it.
