I finally made it to the 2013 NHRA California Hot Rod Reunion at Auto Club Raceway at famed Famoso yesterday. I've missed the past few years and just had to get up there since this is one of my favorite events.
You really need to plan a visit to this event if you've never been. It just keeps getting bigger every year. It's more lowkey than a typical NHRA national event and full of nostalgia. The seats were full all day long for qualifying. The list of names from drag racing's past that attend each year is remarkable.
The small wooden bleacher seating brings back so many memories of drag racing before it became big business. This event is truly outstanding.
I had a chance to meet FABO member SlimPikens who had flown down from Washington for this event. His first visit to the CHRR. Great guy! We had a chance to talk for a few minutes after the Cacklefest ended - 70+ cars with period-correct pushcars this year! And more than just a few had their original drivers back in the seats for the Cacklefest.
He was blown away by the CHRR and will definitely be back next year. Oh, and ask SlimPikens who happened to sit down in the stands for a bit of the qualifying show. Do the initials D.P. and the nickname "Snake" mean anything to you? And Tom (Mongoose) McEwen was there as well signing autographs and memorabilia from the "Snake and Mongoose" movie. Slim said the CHRR is bigger than the NHRA national event in the Seattle area. So much to see.
Here's a few pics - this is just a small sampling of what was there. Give me a few minutes to get them posted - there's over 70. I tried to concentrate on Mopars but I've got a few of others that interested me.
Enjoy....

This is a friend of mine's rat rod that he just finished. Check out some of the great details like tail lights made out of old glass-bowl fuel filters:

This was an original Roth-made part that he got from Rat Fink's "dad" some years ago:

...and "Wild" Willy Borsch's Mustang funny car that he just got through helping to restore. He did the airbrush work, hand lettering, and repaired some of the paint...

Cool pictures thanks for sharing. I almost drove up for Saturday but decided to watch a second cousin race his go kart at California speedway instead.

two weeks in a row to Famoso would be costly money wise but will try and be there next year with my car. Been there before and it id definitely a sight too see.

Really great pictures Ken, and a really great time! I'm in the middle of downloading the 335 videos that I took this weekend. 11.2 gigs of video, hahaha.

*Edit: And again, very happy to have met you!

He sat down right in front of me. I got him to sign my credentials, then later I got the Mongoose to sign it right next to his.

Thanks for posting! CHRR, Home Sweet Home, for me. Haven't been in four years.

I went last year and had a great time. Too much work this year so I kept looking in on bangshift.com. It appeared that there were more nostalgia Funny Cars and Top Fuel Dragsters this year. I am definitely going next year.
