I know it's an alternator, but WTF???

Uh....heh........yeah, that's the "big frame" alternator Ma used starting sometime in the mid 70's, I think the originals were 100A output or something. I used to run one with a "wench" on my old Landcruiser. (340 SB) It would bury a 100A SW ammeter

The two connectors are indeed the field terminals. You can use a common 70's solid state regulator. I know that the service docs say different, but I ran mine for a several years on a standard regulator. They originally required special mount brackets and MUST BE GROUNDED from the case to the engine block-----ground stud there next to the red output lead.
