based off that ad no--- not much info is given-- lots of parts in a picture-- what year is the block? why is it apart? what is the bore? etc.... What heads are they?
looks like problems -- other more knowledgeable members will chime in.

for that coin I would need specific info /conditions .Lawrence

I'd have to see it in person to check it out, a few things stick out, like 5 bolt mains? and the water pump that's on it is the small shaft common deal, known to snap and eat radiators , hoods. but I would check the bores , the heads and crank, if he just pulled the heads to refresh them, why tear down the bottom end?

depending on the bore, and appears to be a steel crankshaft (4spd?) by the balancer. I see big valve j heads, carb intake, 4-spd flywheel, forged pistons (speed pro?) it looks like. looks like most if not all the parts are there and then some. if not bored out past 30 and the crank isn't turned to nothing.
I would say with extra parts it is in the ball park. still too many unknowns. I would arm myself with information take 1,100 and go look at it.

Just my 2 cents, that ad has been posted before for more money...he's coming down in price.

I don't think you could piece it together for that price. I have looked at 340 bare blocks around here and 6-7 hundred is the norm, once in a while you see one for less.

The last complete 340 I found was 3 thousand, I'll bet he still has them at that price.

It also says he will throw in an engine stand if price is met, that tells me he is probably negotiable.

How bad do you want a 340?
Not worth it to me, but it might be to you.
That being said, measure everything and look closely for cracks and flaws especially in the main web area.
The best small block to build a stroker out of?
That's debateable......

Thanks for the input so far. I'm definitely determined to upgrade from the 318. Here's a little more information he just sent me. It's difficult to negotiate, as I am deployed until the end of the month.

"Assembly and work on 340 engines rates easy. I would suggest having the block bored 30 over dipped, checked, decked, new freeze plugs, crank checked for proper size bearings, rod play checked, pistons checked and replaced for an 11:0-1:0 ratio( regular pump gas )Standard rebuilt procedures prior to assembly.
This should put you at about 375 hp plus with headers/duels and a hot coil.
These are "most of the things" I had done to the one in my 1970 Challenger (400 hp).
Gotta go I'm in the middle a home project,
feel free to call as you stated."

Forgot to mention, deployment should be in quotes...I've been in Spain working on airplanes and traveling around since May haha. Love what I do though!

Sounds interesting, it doesn't make your service and commitment to country any less valuable though.

"I would suggest having the block bored 30 over dipped, checked, decked, new freeze plugs, crank checked for proper size bearings, rod play checked, pistons checked and replaced"......??

Scary........I would sure hate to get that call from the machine shop saying "we found a crack in one of the bores". I guess you could work it out with the seller to put a deposit on it, pending a clean check out from a machine shop, then pay him back for the check.

You're going to have to build it regardless. 1500 initial purchase, plus whatever's wrong with it. Plus parts and machine work to put it back together. You'll be well on your way to a crate motor, or starting from scratch on a known GOOD core. Like a larger 360 for example.

That engine is torn down for a REASON. The seller is being very vague about it. Think about that.

Don't let that military money burn a hole in your pocket and end up regretting it. I think I would stay away from it. RUNNING 340s have popped on here for under 1K.

blue fan...purple block...are we building a 340 or eatin some lucky charms...looks like a fair deal doe, just check it out real good..and you can probly us him down some.

mike

Did you ask why he's selling it? Gut feel is you can do better...don't be in a rush...if you HAVE to have it, try and get some kind of guarantee everything is serviceable. Good luck!

5 bolt mains ??

Glad I'm not the only one scratching my head on the 5 bolt mains. If it ran so good, why is it all apart? I have some std bore blocks, but cylinders are worn and not true. Buy the time it is bored, new pistons, balanced, and whatever else it may need. Questionable to me. I have sold fresh built running 340s for $2200. Drop and go. No wondering if anything is up w it.

5 bolt mains scares me...

Purple block and blue fan amuse me....

I see a flywheel in one of the pictures, is it an original 4 speed motor/crank or auto?

I would talk him down a couple hundred if you're really interested in it, I paid a couple hundred more for a complete virgin 69 340 from intake to oil pan with exhaust manifolds, (the good 'uns), fan, pulleys and a trans included...

And then I would repaint the block and fan....
