The machine shop called today and said 5 of the six rods out of our slant were stamped #5's. I never checked them so new no different. Is this normal?

He said their was as much as 35 grams differance in the rods. That sounds like quite a bit to me. My first slant six build, usualy chrysler rods are stamped 1-8 on the v8's. Just figured the six would be the same. Not that it matters just wondering. Thanks Joe

I have a reconditioned set for 175 if needed..sd426

He dosn't need a new set of rods SD...

OP, are you having them redone? bid end resized, new pistons, balanced? if so its dosn't matter, have them balance everything, install and plasti-gauge everything to make sure your clearances are right (.001-.002 stock) and (.002-.003 performance). then you can tq everything down, and re stamp them your self. not a big deal...

Yeah he's balancing the asembly. Got the rods resized just thought it was odd to have 5 of the 6 rods stamped #5.

Yeah I have seen crazy stuff like that before. Long as they are resized, you can put them anywhere and simply restamp them 1-6. Keep us posted on the buildup. I wanna see it.

Thanks for the reply's. It is not going to be a hot rod but a cruiser for my daughter who is now 15. It is going in a 71 Canadian dart this is the original engine, can't belive I am not putting a v8 in it but I have since gained a lot of respect for the slant. I have got a super six intake for it other than that pretty much stock. Decked the block .040 and going to mill the head, shooting for 9-1 compression.

.040 off the block alone will never make 9:1. If you mill the head about .060 and get a thin head gasket from CharlieS, that will put you in the ballpark. Post build pics. We still wanna see it. Sounds like a nice build. It will be peppy to say the least.

Yeah we are milling the head I was going to mill it .080 should easily hit 9-1 with the .021 head gasket. Will post some pics when I get it back. Going after it monday.

It takes in the neighborhood of .100" or more to reach 9:1. They blueprint in the 7s to begin with, even though the spec is 8.2. It takes a lot to get to 9:1, but there is plenty of meat to do it.

Bore is .060. The block is bored, honed and decked .040. The pistons are .018 shorter than the original's. So I tried to make up the difference and then some by decking the block. It had a decent std bore but the guy I bought everything from bought .060 pistons, wich looks not to be a problem in the slant. I'll mock everything up when I get it back and will know more for sure then.

Is the combustion chambers around 60cc? I think I read that some where. The head will be next. Just replacing stock size valves and maybe La valve springs.

Well I think the 9-1 is out of the question. I should have done my home work first. Had the block decked .040 and with the sealed power piston it is now .155 in the hole.

How for can i mill the head before pushrod issues? (stock length)

Rusty you nailed it, they cant have much compression stock. If most of the slants were this way I would say they ran pretty good with that low of compression.

They ran very well. I would take about .070" off the head at his point, IF it has not been milled and you plan to run the standard composition style head gasket. You can probably mill an unmilled slant head .200". I know Charlie "accidentally" did one .125" and it was fine. I have read about people milling much more. If you have .040" off the block, .070" off the head would be .110". The extra .010" would help take up for the thicker head gasket. You might even go .085" for a total of .125". That is of course, if the head has not been milled.

The 400BB in my dad's 74 Adventurer was stamped all crazy too. Since he knew that chrysler stamped the rods from the factory...he never checked when he pulled them. When he went to put them back in...after cleaning, etc., he then noticed that they were stamped not with numbers but with: heart, spaid, club, diamond, maltese cross, etc, etc.!!
This was just a backyard hone/rering so dad was pretty ticked about it. Just thew it together anyways, lol. Sounded like a deisel at start up...prob the sides of the rods wearing in, lol, but quieted up after 20sec or so. Still drives it everday and that was in 2004 or 5!!! Must've got lucky, lol!

I had a 400 stamped like that. A 77 model. Had a factory steel crank in it. The maltese cross meant that it had at least one over size bearing. Mine had the same thing.

That's crazy Rob...the motor in the 74 was a 77 dated block as well! Must've been something with that year. Apparently it was supposed to be a factory replacement block, as the original owner of the truck used it to pull a camper all over the U.S. and pulled the guts out of the original; and when my dad got it the truck had 274,000mi on it. I think it's rolled over 400,000mi now. Dad got it in 1993 or 4. Who know's if the trans has been rebuilt, lol. I know for a fact not since he's had it. Truck had an 8 3/4 with 3:55 Cone type sure grip....that got replaced with a 3:23 open when the 3:55's went into my 71 Dart at the time, lol. Again, it's his daily driver....even outlasted the 2002 zx2 escort he bought in 03 that's now in the scrap yard!

Sorry, not trying to hijack the thread :)

The head has had nothing done to it. At this point I'm just going to try to mill the head as far as I can and be able to use stock pushrods.

PM CharlieS and see what he says about pushrods. I think they can still be used even with .100" plus milled from block and or head. Let him know how much is off the block, what head gasket you plan to run and about where you want compression to be. He has actually DONE all of this several times and can tell you exactly what to do to get there.
