My '67 GTS convert with 383-4bbl and factory exhaust manifolds needs a complete system replacement, from manifolds back. First time I got the car in the air after purchase, it looked like the system was done by a high school shop welding class. It's an "H" system but the cross pipe in the H is cracked away from the left exhaust pipe. I'd like to achieve the closest sound to original yet still have good performance. A little loud wouldn't hurt my feelings but hate a lot of drone. Would prefer ordering a system designed for the car so wouldn't be a big issue with fit. And would appreciate all opinions on X versus H designs. Don't recall factory original systems having either but that was a long time ago too. So any and all ideas, opinions, thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

you could get the A body dual exhaust kit and have an exhaust shop make you the front pipes for the manifolds

or just have a shop do all the exhaust; support local and have a nice system, just make sure its aluminized, it'll last longer

If engine is fairly stock I don't think you'll gain anything noticeable with an X or H pipe other than sound maybe. Factory pipe did not have this. I would go 2 1/4 " out the back magnaflow mufflers. They sound good but not to loud and turn down out the back was factory. Probably cost around 350 to 500 to have made complete.

That Accurate system looks pretty slick. What are you guy's thoughts on the single piece front exhaust pipe they offer (concours type?), compared to the two piece. And do you think the Magnaflows would work/fit this kind of system? Also my current system has had the chrome tips installed but I think the originally equipped turndowns would perhaps be better suited for this car which has been put back to mostly original look by previous owners. The chrome tips do look slick though. Would appreciate you guy's thoughts. Oh, and a big THANK YOU to 66Val, Rocky and dart4 for your input.

Years ago I put an Accurate exhaust system on my 67 GTS that has stock exhaust manifolds. It's 2.25" dia with 2" tail pipes. There seems to be some discussion about the original tail pipes being 1-7/8" or 2". I got my car when it was 1.5 years old and 16,439 miles. It had the smaller tail pipes. I had the performance Accurate three chamber mufflers when I installed the Accurate system years ago. Since then I have had Manaflows, Dynomax Turbos and lastly Dynomax VT mufflers installed. After the engine rebuild I got horrible drone. I have a thread here on what I went through finally getting rid of the drone.

Call Accurate and talk with them. Good folks !!!!

The BB exhaust he does is 2.25" 2 piece head pipes with 2" single piece tail pipes. The orginal tail pipes are two piece welded 2" to 1 7/8" with the stainless tip going inside the 1 7/8" effectively reducing it to 1 3/4". The standard head pipe they sell is two piece and just makes it a lot easier to install. He will make the 1 piece if you are doing a "concours" resto.

They built mine with 2.5" headpipes like the 69 originals after quizing me on the motor/cam and gears I am using. He also explained that the full 2" tail pipe with the Tips going over the outside keeps better flow all the way out.

Any way the kit they offer is complete with (all) hardware, hangers and tips.

1967-68 and 1969 a-body big block exhaust systems were two completely different configurations including the pipe sizes. 1967-68 were equipped with a two piece head pipe that were 2.25" O.D. at the front and midway back were downsized to 2" O.D. pipe to the mufflers. The mufflers were 2" I.D. in and out. The factory welds were where the 2" met the 2.25" head pipe (below the front seat area) and the mufflers were welded directly to the 2" head pipe sections. Not a pretty exhaust system to look at.
1969 (383/440) head pipes were 2.50" O.D. one piece units with the mufflers being welded directly to the head pipes. A cleaner appearance and better flow than 1967-68 head pipes.
Tailpipes were different as well between the years. Here is a description of the 1969 units which we also use for all years that were exhaust tip equipped.

The only time we would supply a 2" tailpipe is if it was special ordered and this would be incorrect for 1969 except for the two piece factory units which would be 2.25" at the front (muffler end) and 2" at the rear-then sized down to 1-7/8 I.D. for the exhaust tips. The 1968 tailpipes were 2" at the front (muffler end) and 1-7/8" at the rear. Then these were sized to 1-7/8" I.D. for the chrome tips. The 1967 big block a-body models were not chrome tip equipped and were 2" at the front (muffler end) and then an 1-7/8" O.D. section was welded in (near the front of the fuel tank) back which included the turn down section at the rear. Changing the 1967-68 O.E.M. exhaust system to the later 1969 configuration with a full 2.25" exhaust system is an improvement in both appearance and flow. But increasing the size to 2.25" from the front to the back does increase the noise level over the smaller original exhaust system. Altering cam profile, induction and other parts also changes the exhaust note and most of the time increasing interior resonation under load and certain rpms. Just a few things to consider when deciding what exhaust system is right for your combination.

Got My tailpipe sizes wrong and as you are the "Man" that makes them glad you chimed in...... Can't wait to get the point of installing the system you built for me.

Thanx Tom.
