I have a 66 Dart 273 convert as my daily driver. It has 40 over flat top pistons with hydraulic lifters (and I assuming hydraulic cam as well).

I took my heads (920's) off my small block 273 and the machine shop said they are completely worn and will need new valves, guides need to be rolled, the seats are sunken and will likely need to be changed. The total cost will be around $900 to do it. I am thinking of buying some eddy heads because my long goal is to build a beasty 360. And I could just swap the heads over when the build is complete. That project has not started and it probably a year or more away though. So I am leaning toward the cheaper route. I found these heads on craigslist for $150 each. This is the descriptions and the part number....

Waterhouse Motors closed their doors July 2008 and this is the leftover cylinder heads we have. All heads are priced at $150.00 ea.

Each cylinder head has been remanufactured with the same procedures. Oven /shot blasted, Magnafluxed for cracks, new bronze guide liners, three angle seat maching, refaced valves, new valve springs. If you don't see what you want on this list, I don't have it. These heads are sold as is

822563 2 CHRYS 360 V/8 360 1975-89

$150 each for referb heads sounds really good. My question is will they fit my 273? The block has the date 11-11-65 on it.

Those 360 heads have open chambers which will lower your compression and kill the power in your 273. Look for 318 heads to keep small combustion chambers. If you do go to buy different heads, take your exhaust manifolds to make sure they clear the newer head castings.

Do you know what years of 318 heads will work? I found some on ebay that look good, casting number 4027163 from 1984.

Those are the previous incarnation of the famed "302" heads of 1985-92?...they work but, IMHO, they aren't as good as the later 302's. They are open chamber heads...302's are closed, heart-shaped, high-swirl chambers.

It should not cost 900 to redo as stock 273 heads. Go somewhere else.

It shouldnt cost you more than $500 to recon your 273 heads, and would be the easiest and best bet for you.

Don't use the 360 heads unless you can mill them safely to 64 cc's which is where the 273 heads really measure in terms of chamber cc. When the compression isn't changes, the 360 will make more power .

Anyone who questions this needs to talk to IQ52.

The 273 will run with those heads, but the drop in compression (in addition to using those thick blue head gaskets that have a giant bore) will be sad. I agree with the above, $900 seems nutso. Look around and don't accept a machine shop that knurls the valve guides......make sure they replace all worn ones.

They were only talking about knurling the guides because it would cost about $65 for the set as opposed to over $200 to replace them.

I got another place that I am going to give a shot on Monday.
