Failed smog test fuel tank not holding vacum

-
Okay so remove screws from outer ring. What the hell with the filler neck. Removed rubber floor seal screws pulled filler neck out of grommet calling it a grommet is very suspect. Ewwwww nice shape. What the hell filler neck was hacked by Mr Corn Hole to run leaded fuel check you out Mr fabricator.

Okay so i have found the big leak. Can you believe it he hacked off a neck with no down size for unleaded fuel. Then went to a muffler shop with the long end and had it enlarged and just slid in the filler end no welding nessasary.

So 2 hour latter and 2 hours of welding grinding fitting there you go air tight looks good.

No wonder he never registered the car just left it non opted .

Tuesday morning is off to the smog test parying it passes

Missed this check out the grommet and finished filler. When installed the filler pipe it was so dam tight had to use dab of bearing grease to get filer neck back in car.

So you had some fun and found out the problem- Everything... Did you get a good look in the tank? They can be pretty gunked up. Should be good for the smog test now - good luck!

I was going to say the same. After the test I'd drop the tank and get it cleaned out. There's got to be a lot of junk drifting around in there including the remains from the old float and who knows what from his hack job. Most radiator shops will do a great job. I dropped my tank because it had been sitting for eight years to get it cleaned out and could hear stuff rolling around inside and it was an old lady's car. Also looks like you need to wire brush the contact area on the tube where the ground clamps on.

Good luck on the test!

This guy ran leaded gas in this car for year inside of tank was fairly clean.

I'm not sure what makes the difference. I think a lot of it has to do with where they got there gas. I assume that gas stations have filters on pumps? If someone repeatedly went to a place(s) that did not maintain there pumps maybe? I replaced my duster tank because it had a big dent. Both the one I took off and the replacement I got from a yard were nearly spotless inside. I know that is not always the case...

Okay so I warmed her up today and played this the carb. Ran out of gas got 5 gallons started her up and drove to gas station filled her up fuel gauge works great passed smog check wow finally have registration and can drive her with out fear of the FUUZZZZ.

So happy.

I hate to be the one to break this to you, but it's not clear to me..........did you replace the beat-up filler end where the cap fits? That alone could account for poor sealing and failure of the test. I hope you know you must have the proper fuel cap, known as a "pressure vacuum" cap.

!!GREAT!! I'm so freekin glad that "the area up here" doesn't require smog inspections. I can't say that for ALL of Idaho, as there are a couple of "the southern" counties that require it.

So every 3 days i have to disconnect the fuel filter and let the crude drain out. Big chunks of white crude oh well it may all be out in a few months of driving.??? Sure and the stupid Chinees sending unit reads empty when only 7 gallons have been burned.:mumum: Thats what I get for not buying american.!!! Must be a plot to make me think i need more gas.:tool::tool:

With the new filter screen on the pick-up, I would guess that gunk is mostly in the line, but there's not much space there, so should clear pretty quick. If not, you could blow it out - pressurize tank with very low air pressure through the vent line at the carbon canister. I did that to flush/prime my line up to the pump when I replaced it.

So I guess it reads full, but then drops too soon? Was the new unit arm positioned and bent to same angle as old? Possible correction there. As long as it reads the same every time, your ground is probably good. As for buying American., not sure if there's one available. Did you save your old pickup/sending unit? Can't tell how deep the rust was on it in pic. If you think that could be cleaned up, I'd check the resistance on it. (don't recall the correct readings, but they have been posted several times) If good, I'd just swap the new filter and float on and use it.

I disconnected my fuel line at the tank and the fuel pump and then shot it full of carb cleaner. After it sat I blew the line out with my compressor. I've not had any trouble and my filter has stayed unclogged.
