65 225 dart, piecing it back together. oem would be single field alt., order total of 3 from bumper to bumper, all came double field, instead of single field,,,owner of store calls their tech and they say, " no big woop. just hook up THE,one field wire to the lower terminal", I ORDERED SINGLE FIELD ONE YESTERDAY FROM o ' REILY, THEY EVen had choice of 50 to 60 amp. question is is it good to have the correct single field alt for function or could a second field wire be added to the double field one????? i did order the 50 amp as it appears all these old cars had dash wiring troubles from what i read on the forum. just wondering. ( or as Mom said, " don't be thinkin, you're not used to it!!".

Just like the round back, they have different output ratings as well.
So just because it's a squareback does not mean it's a 100 amp.

In fact the factory never made a 100A squareback. I think the largest OEM squareback was around 65A.

Listen to Dart 273 knows his stuff, if i remember when selling the double pully square backs they were rated in the Dixie books at 68 Amp.I even think the part number from Dixie was A330.

seems like back in my swap meet parts huntin sellin days, findin what we thought was 100 amp cop alt, i don't have handy everyone's resto catalogue s, but classic industries show a 100 amp alt used on s/6 70-76 2 groove pulley, small block 70-76, 70-73 , thats 318 and 360, 70-71 383 etc....

What you found was a completely different alternator than what is being discussed here.

Ditto. I have one of those 110 A alternators. You can find on Autozone's website. It has an external fan like a GM. It is much bigger than I expected, so I don't plan to use the beast. Might have been used in tow trucks.

I would get a square-back, simply because they are easier to find today and give a bit more current, especially at idle. The one in my 82 Aries used to fail the floating diodes every 2 years like clockwork, but probably from bad air flow in a transverse engine. The bulkhead melting problem is a separate issue to address, though a bigger alternator can enhance the melt-down.
