single vs. double field alternator?

What you found was a completely different alternator than what is being discussed here.
Ditto. I have one of those 110 A alternators. You can find on Autozone's website. It has an external fan like a GM. It is much bigger than I expected, so I don't plan to use the beast. Might have been used in tow trucks.

I would get a square-back, simply because they are easier to find today and give a bit more current, especially at idle. The one in my 82 Aries used to fail the floating diodes every 2 years like clockwork, but probably from bad air flow in a transverse engine. The bulkhead melting problem is a separate issue to address, though a bigger alternator can enhance the melt-down.
