Stopping the knock: Lower compression and ported heads...

As I wrote, I have next to zero experience with head porting.
The ports are pretty smooth inside. They had a natural texture of cast aluminum before. I am kicking myself for not taking any "before" pictures because I usually do.
A guy on DodgeCharger.com mentioned an idea that never occurred to me: having the chambers opened up to 90 ccs and using a thinner gasket. His idea was that I'd get better quench yet also lower the CR. Now I am second guessing my plan. I am tired of making mistakes. I'd be willing to dig deeper to have these chambers opened up more if it were possible.
Have you heard of this?
