Discount Tire just lost my business

-
To kind of change the subject.

I like the wheels that are on my car now, and the raised white letter, I am open to suggestions to suggestions on what size tires meet that criteria. And for that matter, what brands you suggest.

215/70-14 BFG TA Radial all around. White letter out.

My Discount Tire Story-

About a month ago I ran into a small ditch that a construction company created and did not cone off properly. (this is in my SAAB daily driver) The small ditch ended up popping both tires on the passenger side.

I had the car towed to a local garage who after looking at the car decided there was no suspension damage and that just the tires were blown. (of course they dont do tires there)

I had the car towed again to Discount. After about a week they finally called me stating that they had broken three lug bolts off of the front and two in the rear. Discount told me that they were able to get the tires on though of course so they were ready to settle up but i would need to get the car towed to have the hubs replaced.

Discount was unwilling to pay for the repairs. They gave me $100 off the total but I had to spend another 200 on the hubs and bolts.

I understand that the bolts' integrity could have been damaged in the "crash" but what I dont understand is why they didn't stop after breaking the first bolt.

I'll continue Charlie's rant, though Discount Tire (was America's Tire here) has always done me right. In my case, Goodyear in Atlanta spun a stud on my 69 Dart and didn't tell me, just re-installed the wheel like that. I found out when the tread separated on the highway and I couldn't take the wheel off, so had to drive home with the tread slapping the inner fender. I am guessing they didn't understand left-hand threads, strange since many cars had them in the 60-70's (Charlie's Saab?). After that, I always had the tire service guy (never a Goodyear again) write "LEFT-HAND THREADS ON LEFT SIDE" on the service form, and still had to step in the shop and tell the illiterate idiot to stop cranking up his impact wrench when I saw him fussing with a wheel. Even with all my diligence, a Pep Boys managed to put a big scratch down the side of my brand new paint job, then claimed they had no tool that could have done that, so I have shunned all Pep Boys since. Tires are the only thing I have a shop do, and I usually take them off and bring them in so they can't screw up my cars.

BTW, tread doesn't come off only on old tires. All 4 Uniroyals that GM selected for my new 82 Chevy S-10 had tread fly off in big chunks before 20,000 miles. I wonder why they went out of business.

Lots of deaths are caused by tires that are "out of date". Tons of lawsuits are in progress about that right now. For those of you that know nothing of tires you should educate yourselves on this issue. As far as a lawsuit for NOT balancing your tires..... good luck.... if they didnt balance or touch your tires and you leave and have a accident they are free and clear. They especially if the tires are outdated and you ignored the warning. Rubber gets old no matter how many miles they have on them. Educate yourselves.

Before you start telling me that I know nothing, please list your credentials and degrees.
I am not a hillbilly, I am educated and know enough to evaluate what I see and hear
With you attitude, I can do nothing but ignore you

I wish they could let us close our threads. I would close this one. I am done with this thread..... but you guys continue

Credentials ? I have spent the last 12 years selling tires at a Dodge Dealer. I am the manager of the Express Lane. I have gone through Mopar Tire works Training, Goodyear training, Michelin training and on and on. I have seen first hand what tires that have great tread but are old do. I have also Gone through dealer 20 groups and meetings (gatherings of High end Dealers) and have had round robin discussions on the issue. I have generated reports and findings for Tire Review publication and Tire review website. I have also kept up with some of the current lawsuits that are in place due to companies that have sold tires that are out of date and have caused fatalities.
This is a open forum. I am not calling anyone a idiot. I am calling people misinformed and before bad mouthing a business that is one of the largest retail tire companies nationwide one should have the facts as to why that company wont touch the tires on a vehicle. There is loads and loads of info on the internet with a quick search about this topic as well.
If you choose to ignore my comments that is fine by me. However, when you place statements such as the one you originally did on a open forum be aware that people are going to comment.

Against my better judgement ----- Oh you are a tire sales man.
That explains everything

I do not do business with Discount Tire. I don't know, nor do I care about their national reputation, I only know that I received a hard time at a local store, the first time I attempted to do some business with them, and haven't looked back.

I'm making no statement against their product, their company, nor their mission statement. I only know that the person I dealt with seemed as though he, not only didn't want my business, but couldn't be bothered answering a few question.

Sure does.... I know what I am talking about. Thanks for letting me show that.
Thanks for asking for credentials and then making a dig against me.

They didn't...Uniroyal is still around.

Most of the people that ***** about tire shop policy haven't been near a tire when it pops off a bead or decides to let go.
Beyond that, you're not paying their insurance.

Is the bodywork on your car really nice? That alone should be incentive enough for you not to roll on tires that belong in the 4th grade. Both my Neon and my Dakota have wrinkled fenders thanks to tires letting go. Not worth it.

Would you roll on NOS '70's tires? They're new, right?

I have seen 2 year old tires that I would never use and 15-year-old tires I'd run at Talladega. The tires on my Caddy are old: a set of very-rare (I might have the last full set in the country) CHP Goodyear Eagle GT's in the (no longer made) 235/70VR15. They were stored in a dark, climate-controlled room until last year...about half worn (I knew they would not be long-wearing), they are in good shape & should last me one (maybe two) more years.

One trailer at work is an ancient (1971?) Fruehauf 28' pup...it still runs 20" lock-ring wheels with 10.00-20 tube tires. It has tires on it from 1997 and 1999 (made by "Union" and "New Pride"), goes out three days a week, and comes in loaded to the roof and heavy every time. Reality: NOBODY has any real limit on tire age...not the DOT, not even the FAA. Yes, the FAA is fine with a 15-year-old tire (capped three or four times) on that 757 you just boarded! Yes, the DOT is fine with 15-year-old steer tires on a gasoline tanker!

And yes, I'm fine with LESS government intrusion in my life!

don't ever use that old tires on any car you or your family drives, thats just playing lottery with your lives.

Braking distance, handling.. etc is compromized. even 8 yeard old NOS tires are crap, don't matter where they are storaged. rubber loses its properties get harder due time.

And if you have ever driven on ice/snow on old tires and new ones on same car you can see difirence, just 5 years old tires have twice long braking distance...

And yet...NASCAR ran a race on 8-year-old tires a few years ago! The sky is NOT falling!

There is a world of difference in light duty car/truck tires versus heavy duty truck/commercial tires. I have a 59 grain truck that has tires that has been on it for decades.
