Looking at that pic I see a lot more crud on one or two pistons than the rest. Are those the cylinders that did not have the valve seals on them? That grainy carbon can glow hot and cause detonation. With the thinker gaskets, clean combustion surfaces, and the cam degree checked - you may be OK. Keep us posted.
