1971 Match Race ~ 'Duster 340' vs. 'Boss 351 Mustang'

-
Essentially the same motor they put into the panteras. I know them very well and you can either make them stump pullers or high rpm screamers by a quick cam swap. My dad and I built one for the silver state race in Nevada and the guy had us build him essentially a stump puller and geared the ZF transaxle something ridiculous and he averaged 155 mph at 4,800 rpm. They are amazing motors, one of fords wins.

Yes,

Many ended up in the 'trash bin'.

Amazing.....I've never seen nor heard of a spreadbore Autolite carb.....makes me wonder why they used a Quadrajet on the 429 cobra jets then......

Very thirsty Carburetors those #4300-D units

Primary 1.563" x Secondary 1.960" > with a large Fuel Inlet.

O-M-R,

In 1972, in NHRA Pure Stock, both cars ran in B/Stock {10.00 to 10.99 Wt/Hp}

No Headers, as all 'factory' exhaust systems were required.

No Slicks, only D.O.T. treaded tires as wide as you could get, provided
that fit inside the rear well. L-60 series were popular.

And, the car had to be 'street-driven' to the Track.

Any gears allowed. But everything else, 'factory stock'.

The ports on the Cleveland are HUGE. I don't think any small block has bigger ports.

Here is some pictures compairing them to ford windsor heads.

They also have 2.19" intake valves! Pretty impressive really.

Is this going on? The first thing the moc1 was a performance up grade made to complete in the pony car group. Which the duster is not a part of! Those wound be the challenger and cuda if we wanted to compare apples to apples we sould compare the moc to one of these! Or the duster to the maverick which the little 340 wound eat its lunch as would the ebodys so why even ask!!!!!!

You make a reasonable point "Tbone" as far as the Pony car aspect. But these threads by "69 Cuda 440" are geared toward straight line competition. With two well prepped/tuned cars and decent drivers, even the 3x2 E bodies would struggle to take out the 71' Boss.

I will add that this discussion is putting one of the special "high End" small blocks vs a mass produced "performance" engine. The fact that many 340 cars can run very close to a Boss351, LT1, Ramrod/W31 Olds, etc...is a testament to how special a relatively mild SBM really is.

I built a 351-C once.
Used the 2V heads, Eddy dual plane intake, Comp RV cam & set the compression in at 9:1.
This was a pretty quick ride, good bottom end power.

Straight-Up...... '1/4 Mile Race'

'Pure Stock vs. 'Pure Stock'

4-Speed and 3.91 Gears, and with a Performance Tune-up.

The slight-edge goes to the 1971 'Duster 340' over the 1971 'Boss 351',
with both cars running in the 13.80's.

The 'Boss 351' will have a higher MPH, as it will come on at Top-End after losing
car lengths coming off-the-line wheel hopping and spinning it's tires.

The 'Duster 340' is better balanced.

The 'Duster 340' is lighter by a 120+ lbs. {Shipping Weight}, and has 100 lbs. of more mass over the Rear Tires.

The 'Boss 351' is 'nose heavy' and has 200 lbs. more weight in the front.
