The wrong torque shaft that is. I was thinking ahead and trying to get all the pieces I am going to need to put the 4 speed in and was looking on Brewers website getting ready to buy the frame ball stud bracket and starter shield and ran across the z bar on there. I was reading the description of it ( TS238 ) and it mentioned a 7" tube length for it. I measured mine out of curiosity and it measures 8". Is the TS238 that's on Brewers site the right one for my application (73 Dart Sport), 360/833 and if so what does this one fit with an 8 " tube. I am too trusting and the fact that when I bought all these parts from the guy in Detroit along with the tranny, I had no idea what to look for. All I saw was a bunch of parts I needed not necessarily the right ones. So does anybody know what this z bar fits. I may have to sell it and get the right one. pics below. has 8" tube length. one arm is about 4 5/8 " long and the other one is about 4 1/4" long. Bill

I think I am in trouble here. I was hoping to get help from you guys putting this 4 speed in.

I am sure a member will indeed jump in and help you out on this trudysduster, but with the time of the season Christmas and all it may take a few before a member can/will jump in and help on this, I am in no was a good tec on this. Have a Merry Christmas and I am sure a member will jump in here soon 8)

If you post it,they will answer, give it a little bit....the paramechanics are on their way...they may be a little drunk or sleepy but they will respond..lol

You say "your shaft" is 7" long and the one you bought is 8" long. Is your car already a standard shift car?

The difference in length of the z bar shaft is from.... The longer one is for a slant six and the shorter shaft is for a v8 equipped car..... I believe! I hope this helps.

I am going to call Brewers and get a 7" one but just curious what this one was for. and how much other stuff I bought with the tranny that is incorrect.

Let me go out in the garage and compare the ones I have. I remember having the longer one also. Be right back.

you can also cut a 1/2 inch off each end and drill the little spring hole and used that one it will save you about 50 to 60 dollars i do it all the time it will work

Do as badlilred suggested. But the measurement I came up with was that you just need to cut about 3/4" off one end, the end you cut is the side that is closest to the transmission. If that isn't isn't enough when you try to install it, trim it a little more.

^^^^^^^^^ X3,, - it's done often, as /6 ones are more avail..

hope it helps.. seasons best..

Ok guys, I have not messed with a 4 speed in 40 years. I am going to assume that you are talking about the left side in the pic below. the side that has the longest tube. I am also going to assume that it needs to be 7 " total length. is that the side that goes next to the tranny. I have never installed a 4 speed tranny being converted from an automatic before. this is new to me. I am not even sure I can do this. But I am going to try. I just bought the clutch kit and flywheel for my son for Christmas. I am going to be asking a lot of questions in the future. One of the arms on this z-bar looks like it is bent very slightly. can it be heated and straightened and be ok. I only want to do this once. pic below.

I just checked the z bar real close and I don't like it. the pin on the arm is worn pretty good where the rod attached. it is worn about half way through. I think it may be better to just get a new one. is there any place other than brewers that has them. I didn't see any at Passon Performance.

I replaced just the pin on my Z bar. Brewers sells those individually.

UPDATE: got to looking at the shifter rods that go from the shifter to the tranny. wrong ones. nothing pisses me off more than to try and do a job and not have the right pieces. even more than me getting screwed on the pieces that came with the tranny that are the wrong ones. I figure that was my fault because I did not spend the time to check it out better. so I bought all new rods and rod kit, new z bar, fork rod kit, firewall boot, linkage washers and rubber seals and a new frame ball stud reinforcement brace. Now I believe I have what I need to put it in the car. all except the knowledge to do it. But I am a hard headed old fart. I believe I will eventually get it done. I also bought a couple of new pretties for it. Thanks inertia.
