I have my new tank and now a sending unit (thanks JD340)All are new.I need to get out of the house today. My question is.....seal to tank then sendingunit then locking cam in that order, correct and also would you in stall the unit before painting the tank and undercoat it/stone guard for protection. Any thoughts appreciated.BTW im in Ontario so painting it will be in home......to cold.

You have the right order. Painting would be preference. You do have the top pad right?

Top pad was included with sending unit. orig. one had none. its black with cuts in it. I asume it lays one the top of the tank? do you glue it down or something? BTW thanks for the help

Ok, i see i think. So you put it on top and when you tighten up the strap it keeps it from moving around?Sorry if i sound stupid.....BTW i have one strap 67 Dart. It makes sense. The pad, what its use? keeps the tank from moving around?

It keeps the tank from rattling and wearing on the bottom of your trunk. I glue mine in place just so it wouldn't slip when installing the tank. I also didn't paint my tank and it still looks good three years later.

Be sure to use some type of lubricant on the sending unit seal. I use a little kiss of white lithium grease on both sides. If you don't it will most likely leak. On the gas tank pad, I spread mine out before install and spray the contact side with 3M Glue and let it tack up before install. This way it stays put with no worries. The pad's usually come rolled up and you will have a hard time keeping it in its place on install if not.

Yah, the pad is rolled up. It was a nice suprise on getting it. Jim said nothig about it just the sending unit:cheers:He must have known i needed it..LOL.Being in Ontario canada i think i will at least paint the tank. Im not driving it in the winter but with the amount of sand and salt on these roads linger around late spring. Thanks for all the input

I dabbed the high spots of the tank with weatherstrip adhesive. Placed the pad on and pulled it back off to tack up. Then press in place. I made my pad from roofing rubber, but should work for the original tar paper type.

Be mindful when installing the new sending unit if you are not using the original locking ring. I've read a lot of stories that the new locking rings are thinner and don't provide the necessary seal to prevent leaking. Just a thought.

Yup, I had issues with mine, I had to reuse the original.
