What would be worth more done on a `71 Duster originally /6, stock looking clone/tribute style or modern street machine/pro touring type build? I`m currently collecting parts for the build and since it will be for sale when it`s done to make some money need to know what direction I should go as I really haven`t decided yet. Keep in mind it will be a very low budget as in around $3000 total so a lot of swap meet used parts will be needed. I do all the work myself so it can be done, I did my last project `69 notchback Barracuda for around $2800, had fun driving it for a while and sold it for $6000. Power will be a smallblock as that is what I have parts for and will be auto trans. Cra is already minitubbed so wide meats on the back will be easy. What are your thoughts and ideas?

We need pics.I do not see it going the modern street machine or pro touring route build on a $3000.00 budget.Clone you may able to do on that budget.I put 3k in mine getting it road worthy, tires, wheels, carpet, and stripes.Oh and I did all the work myself. But all my stuff was purchased new.I still have the slant 6 but going to a V8 this spring.I guess mine may be considered a clone when I am done, but I am going for more the 70's look than a clone.

I kinda figured the opposite as used aftermarket parts are usually cheaper than used factory parts. It obviously wouldn`t be a state of the art car but more apoor man`s protourer.

$3000 may be optimistic but my Barracuda was pretty rough also.

This one was pretty rusty, a /6 car and needed a lot. It ended up with a stock 360/727, big bolt pattern 8 3/4 rear, discs, custom paint etc.

Pro touring in my book is big wheels, big tires, air conditioning, power steering, power disc brakes, better than stock suspension, more modern interior, and more. And none of that stuff is cheep.
$3000.00 for motor, tranny, body work, paint, interior, wheels, tires, etc.I just do not see it unless you have a stash of parts to use.How cheep can you do the paint and body even using cheep materials?I know where I can get a 66 Barracuda for $500.00 I thought of buying it and just building it with used and swap meet parts. But I did not plan on a show car or a car I could flip.More of just a beater car.

Poor man`s Pro tourer = lowered w/17" wheels, aftermarket buckets, custom dash (make myself) etc. It would have the look but not all the suspension, brakes etc. but the next owner could always do that stuff.

I think a poor mans pro touring car you will scare the pro touring guys away.I also think the muscle car or clone guys would shy away from it also. But I have been wrong before.

With a 3 grand budget, I would make the paint and interior look as nice as you could.
Rebuild the stock suspension and get it running and moving.

Hell if you can make that Duster look as good as your Cuda for 3k. I should drag my Cuda to you and pay you to finish it.:D:D:D

I don't see that being done for $3K. Given everything it needs, even using swap meet stuff, $3K will go pretty quick. Basically I would worry that it will end up looking like a stock suspension car with paint and wheels.

Run down on the `69 Barracuda - car was free- swapped for bodywork on the guys fastback, v8 k-frame, 360/727, c-body 8 3/4 shortened, disc brake setup, Keystones, MT ET streets, racing buckets, 6pack hood scoop, radiator nad lots of other things all purchased used. PPG base/clear paint, interior door panels and dash recovered in vinyl by me and much more all for less than $2800 although that was almost ten years ago so prices have changed but I do think the $3000 is possible. Appreciate all the opinions though so keep `em coming.

Of course I don`t figure my labor costs on my own projects but it would COST you!!! :)

Also keep in mind that this will be a good running driving car with very nice paint but will be far from mint so I figure it`ll be worth around $6-8k when done.

being its starting out a slant 6 car you are gonna have to find the right buyer in any direction you go. it will never be a numbers matching 340 car so why bother building one that looks like a stock 340 car?

Ya, I`m not a big fan of clones but a lot of guys seem to like `em. If I go stock it won`t be a 100% correct clone just more stock looking paint, stripes, interior etc.

Worth more at the end, Pro Touring vs. Resto /6? Pro Touring

Higher ROI (return on investment) - Probably the Resto /6, as doing Pro Touring right is a lot more expensive to build.

I say go with whatever seems like more fun to build. true /6 guys absolutely love them & although I do like quite a few Pro Touring cars, that route seems spendy. If your just flipping the car, getting it running it driving & buff & polish on the paint might be the way to go.

I guess I'd rather see a really nice and fresh - but factory body, factory wheels, etc - rather than a pro touring car. If you want resale, you have to buld for the market - not what you might like. The difference between a $6K car and a $10K car are details like a professionally redone (rechromed, detailed, etc) rally dash, completely gone through dirvetrain, etc. and that's where you get in trouble money wise.

The `69 I built totally for myself `70`s custom style knowing I would have a limited number of buyers who would like. I was in no big rush to sell but I got lucky and someone really liked the metalflake flames and other custom touches and he swapped in a 440 and did other mods to take it to the next level. This Duster I want to sell fairly quick to fund other projects so I think most guys in the lower price range just want a nice v8 powered street machine they can drive and take to local shows and cruise nights.

hey he sold his other car and made a profit! i say lets see if we can rub his head for luck!! really,in the currect old car market and economy, i give kudos to anyone that put $ in a car and sell at profit! i say finding a buyer is having the right car and the right buyer! and finding someone with either money or having it and being willing to spend it!! i beleive after fooling with these old cars since mid 80's, the car market will keep running a cycle as long as there is a market, right now most mopar guys are in 40-55 age group,( thats good income wise) there is a larger repo market than ever ( if ya can afford the prices!), there continues to be the big events to keep interest up ( except here in the sticks of ks!?), the economy has been in the pits since 07, its getting better and i think pretty soon people will guit worrying about losing their job, get tired of not having their toys, and you will see cars start to sell again and prices begin to edge upward again.!???
personally i'm glad cars are cheap. i can afford to drag home another project. hopefully i can get down to the 2 cars i want to keep, sell off a couple of really good drivers for what i think will be a plenty fair price to the guy that buys them, but don't expect them to sell quickly
gettin back to his question, i say: first and foremost make it a driver, take good pics before and after any work, repair all rust, leave finish work to buyer, again good pics before, sounds like he can use his head when huntin and buyin parts, start by puttin NO more in the project than it could be parted out for, if ya gotta rely on selling locally, know what a given car will bring . like the other guy said, if ya want to sell it,best to build to suit your market, not what you like. i admire his gumpshun!!!
