They are indeed money pits and I completely understand the emotional pull these deals sometimes have. It's funny that you should say that you paid $800.00 for your car because that's exactly what I paid for mine (in 1981) LOL
That is truly ironic, I bought my first duster off a car lot about 86, traded an old fury in and gave 700.00 difference for a clean, orange, white interior, 340 4-speed, drove the wheels off that car.
In a minuate of stupid I traded it for a 65 satelite sport 440 auto around 2001.
They are all money pits, just some worse than others.
