G'day everyone,

I need some advice on what to do with the 360 in my VIP but first let me give you the run down on how I got here in the first place.

I purchased my VIP from Vitoria and had it transported to WA (I have a strong feeling that the transport company flogged the guts out of it), after rebuilding the front suspension I was driving to get a wheel alignment when the transmission let go, revs went through the rooff and I bent a pushrod.

So I replace the transmission and pushrods, started it up and had a @#$%*! rattle that seemed to be coming from #1. Taking the plug lead off made no difference to the noise, I then took out the pushrods for #1 and the noise was gone......trashed lifter? Removed the inlet manifold to have a look at the lifter and it seemed to look OK (although the cam lobe for #2 doesn't look so hot - see pic below). SO off with the head....It looks like the piston is hitting the head, what do you think.

So the big question is do I pull the engine and give it a bit of a refresh? head says yes, wallet (and wife) say no!

If that is the only one hitting, I would suspect stretched rod bolts or maybe even a stretched rod. That coupled with the bent pushrods is pretty much proof positive the engine was severely over revved.

How sure are you that is a 360? Our 360 here never got pistons like that.

You can also see where the edge of the piston is also hitting the head. You can see this on the bottom of the first and second picture you posted. I wonder if the piston is starting to fail.
Rebuild time.
And you got it from Victoria?? They are well known for thrashing Valiants :)

G'day RustyRatRod,

I have decoded the engine number and it is a 1973 360. Yes that is the only one that seems to be hitting.

I was told it has had a bit of work done with forged pistons, H beam rods, flowed and cc'd heads, stainless valves, "big" solid cam, ARP bolts etc. It has a Barry Grant 750 Might Demon and an Edelbrock Air Gap manifold.

cheers

G'day Bakerlite - I didn't even notice the damage at the bottom, I was too focussed on the damage at the top.

I see all..... :) Pull it a down and you will soon see if you got BS'd on the internal parts.

It looks like that engine will be coming apart. it is also possible that the strikes caused rod bearing damage

well you got a lot of sucking up to do, because that engine needs to come apart.

That engine looks beat, even looks like sludge in the valley. I would pull it apart and have it checked out.

Thanks everyone, looks like I'm going to learn how to rebuild a small block.

I am after a good reference book for the rebuild now, any suggestions?

Regards
Anthony
