Been thinking of replacing my HYD cam in my 273. I'm not going to do the mechanical cam thing.
I was looking a Summits SUM-K6900 it says 1200-5000 rpm
204/214 @ .050
.421/.444 lift
112 LSA
I don't want some loppy/ shakey/ bad vacuum cam. But would like good vacuum, smooth idle cam with abit more lowend and something that maybe improve MPG.
So what should I look at ?
Oh yeah, I've got an automatic/3.23/ flat top pistons/ 4 brl/ GM HEI conversion / 3000 lbs Dodge A100/ 273 +.030....not looking for race car power.

It should be a good cam. Just about the same specs as a Isky E-4. tmm

That will be a good idling well manored good mileage cam. The 112 spec will have a nice idle. Not a muscle car kind but not super duper smooth like a stock 114 cam.
I ran a Crane cam with a 112. 216/228 @ .050 - .455-.480-112
Do a search on you tune for 74 duster exhaust and view my beige duster starting up on a cold day. It chops a little bit when cold and smooths out nice when warm.
You can search via my screen name as well, rumblefish360.

Lots of those type cams available, but the summit is "money" compared to the others. With fresh stock springs or Comp 901's, i think it will give you what you're looking for. I do like Rumble's hotter pick though, but then again, I can't help but be a hot rodder...lol.

That cam I listed ran a 15.14 with a half tuned carb on a cold Novemeber day at Atco, N.J. In a stock '79 - 318 with headers into a Jegs exhaust, LD4B, Carter 625, with a dead stock 904 & a sure grip equipped 8-1/4 with 3.21 gears on a stock size tire spinning out of the hole.
ESPO 1 inch over bend springs were used.

Had I finished the tuning chore and ran a wider tire for traction, I'm oh so sure there would have been a few 14 sec. slips.

The car got 17/18 MPG's Hwy. A spirited car for what it was.

Since I've got a 273, I don't want to over cam it. As you know in most cases the cam manners will change with engine cubes. So my thinking with a 273..be conservative .
Any input is welcome.

Well I have mine and if you didn't catch it, I like the choice.

I am running the generic 204/214 cam in my Mustang's only slightly warm 289 with headers, 2.79 gears, and automatic. It pulls about 18" of vacuum in neutral, and easily idles down to 600 RPM in drive. With my gears, I almost feel like I should have gone one step smaller, like a 194/204, but I can't complain too much about the 204/214 so far. I only have 1000 miles on the engine so far, however, so we'll see.

With your 3.23s in the back, it should be just about right.

So how has the cam effected your gas mileage ? What kind of vacuum in gear ? My build is going toward driveabilty, mileage, vacuum. Not looking for rump rump/ wish I went smaller cam (been there done that).

In gear it's probably 13" or so. It doesn't rump; it idles smoothly. Gas mileage so far kind of stinks, but I drove it on a 150 mile roundtrip with 450 miles on the engine, and it got 17.5 MPG. I have an Edelbrock 1406 on it, and it was about a step or two lean at that point. In mixed driving, I'm in the 12-13 range. It didn't do all that much better with the stock cam and two barrel it used to have, but the engine was pretty much worn out at that point.

I like that cam too Rumble. Schneider has one close to the Crane
#14202
224° @ .050
advertised 264°
.480 lift 110°

I would like to hear the Crane and Schneider run. I just might have to buy one or the other, put it in the ol' 273, and see what happens. tmm

isky 256/62 super cam.best stump puller ive ever run. 256* / 262* .425/.435 lift 110 lsa.good vac and mileage as well as torque.

So what kind of mileage and vacuum we talking about? (what engine is it in also )?
well i had the single pattern 256* .425 cut on a 108 lsa in a 318 powered valiant it 18 mpg combined city/highway with about 15" of vac.the 256/262 cam was in a 3/4 ton chevy truck with a 350.it had stock vac and a very slight chop to the idle.if a stock/smooth idle and vac are a concern to you you could go with a single pattern 256* 425 lift 112lsa "supercam".

I guess I'm more interested in the low end power, and the mileage. I would think that the idle and vacuum with a cam for those needs should be very fine. But what do I know. ?

if you read my other post i described it.it was in a 3/4 ton chevy truck with a stock 350 and TH 350 auto trans.it had a slight chop when cold but was pretty stock sounding once it warmed up.the only power adders it had were headers and an and dual exhaust.i imagine it would have a slight lope in a 273.if you call isky they have great customer service and will grind you a custom cam for your application.if you were concerned with the idle quality or the 256/62 you could have it cut on a 112 lsa instead of 110.
