Living in Minnesota my vehicles are parked for several months out of the year. I was wondering what kind of insurance coverage everyone has on their collector vehicles and what it covers during storage months? I need to get coverage on my duster and my 67 D200 but I want to make sure they are covered incase of a fire or a roof colapsing because of heavy snow. I have talked to my insurance agent and there is custom insurance that you can set the value of your car or there is collector insurance. The problem with collector insurance is you can only drive it on a limited basis. Does anyone have custom insurance and have you had any issues with claims if God forbid an accident would happen?

I keep standard comp insurance year round on all mine, with a stated apprased value.
Drive any time I want.
Collecter car insurance, it must be almost 100% stock.

I have had Hagerty for years, no mileage restrictions but must not be your daily driver and must be garaged. For only around $250-270 a year I keep it insured and on the road year round even though we have 5+ months of winter.

I've had American collectors on my last 2 cars, very reasonable with little restrictions. Referred a few friends to them and they are happy.

state farm full coverage and agreed upon replacement cost I pay about 170 per year drive whenever I want no restrictions

My Duster is insured through Nationwide for $25,000. $118.00 per year. The Omni is $5,000 for $78.00 per year.

Thanks for all of the replies. Looks like I will be staying away from the collector insurance and going with custom insurance with a set amount for replacement cost.

Great idea for a thread, Ive been think about doing something about insurance on my Dart cause I only have liability.

So, all the collector car insurance companies require the vehicle to be nearly stock? So street rods, hot rods, modified muscle cars, etc, need not apply? If that's true, I had no idea.

Not 100 percent true.I have a 67 Fairlane, blown with 2 fours approx. 550 Hp.I have Haggery and have no problems.
I heard once you have a rollbar then it becomes tricky.

Yeah, because then they're expecting you to race. That policy seems like a problem to me because of Pro Street cars with roll bars. I'd assume that you're not covered at the track, so you'd think racing would be the criteria, not having racing equipment installed.

Anyway, thanks for the info.

Hagerty as well, with minor restrictions as listed above, on my last 3 cars. No experience with claims though.

Mercury but no claim yet, knock on wood. They cut me a check for my totalled
Lexus by emailing me 4 like mileage/condition cars from auto trader and computing the average. I got screwed because I just bought 4 new tires but they saw the receipt and kicked me another 400. Not bad, but i'd get the green weenie on my 65 as they are cheap in the paper, although usually bone stock. I'll have them look in Hemmings for my value if I can.

Hagerty, and while on my last visit to KS to see and drive the almost finished 66, I already had to use their tow package for within 50 miles....flexplate broke.....:banghead: but had to return back to FL the next day and totally enjoyed the 2 days I got to drive it. :-D

i have state farm.. stated value of the car.. 170 a year for one and about 95 a year for the other car.. keep in mind that we have a total of 5 cars… all with collision and comprehensive, I am in my 50's i have had state farm for 30 years never an issue with anything.. even paid for towing when I broke down on the way home from chryslers at carlise

I tried to get Hagerty in Canada but the prices weren't very good. I'm with competition insurance now. They seem ok but I've had no claims and that's usually were you have problems. They do insure modified cars and give 25,000 for 240 per year on my big block duster with 33 X 21.5 X 15 wheels on it. They also insured my 89 Shadow under special interest vehicle for 170 per year.
They do have some catch's. You have to have 10 years driving experience and have a insured daily driver.

I spoke at length w haggerty and the collector car associate of usaa. Haggerty has agreed value. My quote was 18 k for car plus 5 k tools for 250 to 300 / year w basic restrictions. Price depended on environment and usage. All work and parts were to have pictures for proof of labor and parts. No coverage during racing, so if it was damaged during a race. I remember that my quote was with it in a fully enclosed pole barn or garage. One important thing was that I could not go grocery shopping w it or to "walmart" bc any type of errand running and daily driving was not allowed. So if it were stolen at the mall it wouldn't be covered. Cruises, road trips, shows and typical hot rod adventures were covered.
The other company had the "average" price of a vehicle with my type of mods. I was afraid of that concept not getting a good value if something happened.

American Family. I have my regular cars insured with them also, so I'm not sure what effect that has. I pay only $125 per year for full coverage including towing, stated value is $13,500 on my 1965 Barracuda Formula S. I have had the car brought home twice on a flat-bed due to mechanical problems, and have had no trouble getting reimbursed for those charges.
