rodent proofing a garage

-
Weve got a rat snake in the garage back home... had the same snake hiding out in there for three years now, no rats or squirrels. plus makes kind of a cool conversation starter when friends come over and see a four foot snake laying in the rafters warming himself up.

I'm sorry but if I saw a snake in my shop, I wouldn't be working on the car, and he wouldn't be eatin anymore mice either.:D

My rodent thread.

I have had mice in many vehicles on our farm, they can get into any ventillation duct on a late model car. Shake Away works in cars for 3 months at a pop. Excluding a 100% air tight sealed building you will likely not physically prevent them from coming in. The best thing is to deter them from wanting to be in there by aromatic chemicals or sounds.

Ive tried a number of chemicals and repellents. A large number of moth balls everywhere work decent. I have had cats which worked for outside pretty well but they were spraying in my shop so I started locking them out.

Best thing so far in my shop is to leave a radio on fairly loud mounted to a wall so the speakers produce some acoustic action into the walls. Keeps mice gone from the whole area inside and outside of the shop.

Thanks guys, the ideas give me some ideas until the weather warms up enough to go outside. I tried Fresh Cab (rodent repellant) and checked a couple weeks ago and found one mouse turd (only one) in the trunk. We have 2 cats outside, but the one is a male and got in the garage this summer and sprayed something and the garage still reeks of cat pee. Maybe I shouldn't chase the snakes out when they get in, but I don't know if garter snakes eat mice.

yep..tried almost all above. shake away works best.put in packets made from panty hose.drop through-out car. also google mouse proofing a site i found had diagrams pics materials to mouse proof out buildings. good luck

Also, my radio has 2 separate speakers, one on each side of the shop, each about 1' tall speaker box, and my shop is 20'x20' inside so that gives you an idea of how much sound is reverberating around. I play it "moderately" loud. About 60% volume..

The bucket method works very well..But all you have to do is put water or Rv antifreeze if it is cold out...Put a ramp up to the rim of the bucket and smear peanut butter about 6" from the rim inside the bucket...The mouse rat or whatever will stand on the rim and try to reach down in to get the peanut butter and fall into the water/antifreeze...I caught in one night while camping 130 mice at a campground that had become over run with mice because encon had sprayed for mosquitos and killed off the birds of prey.. ( real smart move on there part) After the first night there my truck got broken into by the little bastards so it was time for all out war..The second night I got 87 mice and kangaroo rats it was the circle of life for all you mice lovers...I dumped them in the river (they were dead) and the Bass and Trout had a feeding frenzy..The third night I got none and there were no more signs of any mice around My sight but I kept the trap set until I left a week later...Bill

Get a good cat or two. They earn their keep.

Yup. I was looking at our property on Google Earth and was astounded that I could see all the gopher mounds and dirt squirrel dens on my property. My daughters got us two cats (Duster and Fury) and problem solved. They are full grown now and are what you'd call the "cat's ***" on those rodents. No mice or rats either.

Music in our garage 24/7....still mice...Stop & think about it....people/pets live in a house and they don't stay away....

Yeah, guess I didn't think it through. But, I do put moth balls down and believe it or not, the electronic rodent keeper awayers from menards. Knock wood, never had a mouse!

Rats are sneaky little bastards!

My mice are field mice as we are quite rural so I suspect they are mainly accustomed to silence. The radio has helped like night and day, although, they will likely get used to it eventually. Then I am going for some highly rated ultrasonic units and a few pounds of moth balls.

Another option if you can tolerate the moth ball smell is: Paradichlorobenzene is the ingredient in most urinal cakes and moth balls. So urinal cakes (made from Para) are just cherry scented large mothballs.

The fresh cab stuff smells quite nice (and pungent) but I have seen mixed reviews of it's effectiveness on amazon.

A couple years ago I bought 4 of these on sale at Menards for $10 each. It doesn't look like they sell them anymore. They make quite a bit of noise (sound like a quieter version of a burgler alarm) but you can just barely hear them outside of a house or garage they are in. I put one in our little place up north and its garage and our pole barn. All three had mouse problems prior to putting them in and haven't since. Our pole barn back up to a corn field and used to get pretty over run especially in the fall.
