...because I sure don't. One of my best friends recently passed away in large part due to his addiction, alcohol. I kind of understand the drug or alcohol addict on the street who has mental issues or is trying to forget a poor life situation and ultimately falls into addiction. I have drank to forget certain things but was always aware of the path I was heading.

My friend however, while a social drinker, always seemed in control of his life. He had a beautiful, loving, caring wife. A house, well paying job. His children were raised right. He even had grandchildren. How an addiction can be more powerful than what he had in life puzzles me. I'm sure he had some demons that no one knew about and his addiction had really escaladed recently. Thank you in advance for your experiences or comments.

Only the weak minded person will let drugs and/or alcohol control their lives, you need to be strong willed!

I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV. But addictions are probably one of the most powerful human drivers that exist. Addictions come in all forms. "Bodily chemistry" has a lot to do with it, just look at our craving for sugar. If you are not troubled by such things more power to you

I probably never really learned to smoke. I "tried" when I was 12-13 or so. But I managed, with the help of my parents and a burning feeling in my differential, to quit. Never have since. But I always figured that if I had smoked, quitting would have been a real problem.

One an addiction is not only drugs and alcohol. It is anything that can control you.You are vary wrong saying weak minded. How do you know if a person has a weak mind. You can possess the same mind as a drugy but wirh food. Honestly if you don't understand addiction you shouldn't comment on it and by what you said you don't understand. Mark

Sorry if I offended you as you must have an addiction yourself but I maintain, a weak mind will eventually destroy you!!:finga:

Very well said. A weak mind has nothing to do with it.

Using a term like "weak mind" is very uninformed. Some of the most successful, and famous people on earth had serious mental problems. Winston Churchill suffered from depression. President Lincoln suffered the same. Anorexia killed Karen Carpenter.

Many mental problems are because of chemical problems in your body. It has nothing to do with a "weakness".

The thing is, this stuff is terribly complicated. No one really has the answers. The U.S. is probably more guilty of any other advanced country of cutting funds for various sorts of mental research and treatment.

Some of the smartest people I know are addicts of one sort or another, also some of the dumbest people I know are addicts. I don't believe a weak mind has anything to do with it. It is a chemical imbalance maybe causing a craving for the offensive thing.

On the other hand I used to drink a quart of vodka per day. Basically I was a functioning alcoholic with a full time job, hobbies, and resposibilities. One day I just got tired of feeling so crappy that I quit and haven't touched any kind of alcohol in the past ten years. Did my imbalance go away? Or did I suddenly become less weak minded?

No, you were never weak minded to begin with as you kept your **** together when you were a functioning alcoholic and knew when enough was enough!....And, you're still living!

I have lived a long life and have abused many things for many different reasons drugs, alcohol, sex, violence, money whatever but I am know longer in bondage to any of that and it has been that way for over 7 years... what I know is we are spiritual beings and if that part of our life is searching/empty we will try to fill it with something and what feels good for awhile can become are cage !!

Since you compare addiction to drugs and alcohol. I don't drink and I don't do drugs. Also I don't smoke so enplane your weak mind. Mark

I agree,I drank a 5th of SC a day for years and functioned and was successful, one day just decided that enuff was enuff and quit that was 25 yrs ago almost 26yrs..wish I could do that with smoking..wow I'm getting old and weak minded now...lol...there are lots of factors for different addictions some people are just more prone to various ones for either mental or physical/chemical imbalance or a combination of sorts...I learned along time ago not to pass judgements on people and their problems I couldnt associate with since I wasnt walking in their shoes even tho frustrating to say the least in some aspects you really dont know or cant always comprehend whats going on in some peoples lives that drive them to self destruct sometimes it seems without warning or reason lest it happens to you...oh no..my wife just walked in the room with a nightie on gotta go getting weak...cant say no..I'm an addict...lol..on a more serious note I too have lost friends to addictions over the years, tragic and such a waste..

Really??? Guess you don't have any mental health issues....because damn near EVERYONE who has a broken chemistry set has relied on drugs and/or alcohol to "help" them out....which for a lot of folks leads to addiction....must nice to be able to pass judgement on others....

don't know about weak minded...but I detect a closed mind...sorry but I known several strong/successful friends succumb to addiction

A couple very closed minded replies. I kicked cigarettes after years of trying, and I was only at worst a pack a day. I am glad for some of you who we're able to quit drinking cold turkey. Many cannot without withdrawing. I am talking hallucinations, coma, and death. Even for functioning alcoholics. My wife is a nurse and this is very real. Addiction doesn't just happen to the weak minded or the mentally ill. Cigs, gambling, sex, drugs, booze... Some only need one try to get hooked. All of us know somebody with an addiction, many of us have or had one. Even when you have kicked it, you are still addict, and here is where the strong willpower is needed to stay away from it.

I have a sex addiction, can't get enough. It has cost me everything I have. My wife takes it all.

Let's see if this is a little less harsh. "Gear Jammer" just earned a permanent spot on my very short ignore list.

Now there is a weak minded response if I ever read one.......it's amazing how the uninformed, uneducated, ignorant can make such statements. Weakness has nothing to do with addiction.

Permanent is harsh...but better than 3-4 hits with a e-body pistolgrip..ouch...lol...so where is this 'ignore list'?
