Having issues with 440 timing in a 67 coronet. It was pinging awful so I tried a few things and now it's not pinging but a bit sluggish and rough idle. Also running hotter. I have 10degrees initial and 28 advance. When I retarded the initial from 15 to 10 it was bad but then I added 10 degrees of advance by changing the stop on MSD dizzy to red. 28 degrees which gives me a total of 38. I am running 1 heavy silver spring and 1 light silver. Would like to get it idling smooth and pulling hard without the Ping. Yes I'm running high octane gas.
Here are engine specs
10:5 to 1 Hemi purple street cam 906 heads mild port 2500 stall

I added 2 degrees of initial timing and now it's real close but pinging slightly on heavy accel. The idle is better and it launches better. Should I pull some advance out of it to get rid of ping?

My 440 wanted 20' initial. Bad ping under load. Stiffened MP dist spring and limited centrifugal advance for 34' total. Turned into an animal. As I understand.. Cams with 110' lobe separation like more advance at idle.

Anyone else want to chime in on a typical initial timing for 440 with this type of build? Im reading everything from 8 degrees to 20.

There is a red MSD bushing that provides 28 degrees of advance??? The largest bushing I was aware of is the black one that gives around 18-20 degrees? Have you checked your timing at 3200 rpm to see what you have with it all in?

back in my 440 days ,along time ago,lol we would mark where distibuter is and move alitte at a time , on back road floor it ,and again till it was where we liked it,timmy

Wazoo - I have my total at 37*, I use to set it by brining it to about 2900, and adjust from there. too much / little, you will fight with the heat, pinging, sign your out of whack a bit. Now I use a MSD-6A2 and locked out distributor and test on the back roads/track like timmy says for best performance, still at 37* total.

I would put the black bushing 18 degrees back in. Set initial to 16 degrees for total of 34. Then play with the springs and timing light to see at what rpm total timing is all in.

Thanks for info. I landed on 12 degrees the silver bushing 25 advance and 2 blue springs. No ping but I think it can get better. Maybe the silver springs.
